Van Jones began his career as an activist in the Bay Area pushing for criminal justice reform. He then moved to focus more on the environment, promoting green jobs as a solution for including disenfranchised communities in the economy while addressing environmental problems. His work in the area, through the nonprofit organization he founded Green for All and his book "The Green Collar Economy," earned him a spot as Special Advisor on Green Jobs in the Obama Administration. After a short tenure in Washington, Jones returned to activism and became increasingly involved in mainstream media as a political commentator for CNN, gaining recognition for his coverage of the 2016 election. Since the election he has worked to promote civility and compassion in American politics and continues to run DreamCorps, his organization to incubate social change.

The Wallace Stegner Lecture Series normally has excellent speakers. It's funny how this omits the fact that he is a revolutionary communist and SJW. This guy has ZERO sense of how an economy operations. He would use the Soviet tactic of setting a five year plan for the comrades to build out "Green Jobs." He was for the GND before it was called GND. He is a natural soul mate of AOC and I'm surprised they haven't hooked up yet.

I'm out of town and can't attend. Of course, if I WERE in town, I probably wouldn't have attended anyway. But it might be fun to hear what he has to say and rub elbows with the extreme environmental kooks in the South Bay / Peninsula area. Anybody in the South Bay / Peninsula want to go and report back?

There's little question that Jones was an avowed communist. In a Nov. 2, 2005, profile of Jones in the East Bay Express , an alternative weekly in Berkeley, Calif., Jones said his life hit a turning point in the spring of 1992 when he was swept up in mass arrests while protesting the acquittal of police officers accused of beating Rodney King.

Although the charges against Jones were dropped, Jones said that while in jail, "I met all these young radical people of color — I mean really radical, communists and anarchists. And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next 10 years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary."

In 1994, the story states, Jones formed a socialist collective called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, or STORM.

According to a history of STORM written in the spring of 2004, the group held "structured political education" training at every meeting "to help members develop an understanding of the basics of Marxist politics." They "trained members on capitalism and wage exploitation, the state and revolution, imperialism and the revolutionary party." So Jones was a self-avowed communist.
