Self-driving cars could be more likely to hit and kill black people due to flaws in the software used to detect objects, researchers have warned. In a pre-publication scientific paper, researchers from the University of Georgia found that computer vision systems are better at detecting people with lighter skin tones.

So I guess if black people would cover any exposed skin with long sleeves and a ski mask, they would be safe as the car would have to stop and figure out who they were to decide to hit them. But the cops would misidentify them and shoot them anyway. It’s either that or they should cover their skin with white makeup so the computer would not identify them and they would have time to escape any injury. But wouldn’t that be dressing white faced? Guess there’s no way to confront the problem. They better run like hell and pay attention when they step off the curb. Let’s face it, cars don’t kill people, computers do.

This, of course, implies the algorithms are programmed to be biased by racially biased programmers.
It's likely much simpler. Light objects are easier to see particularly at night.
We've all heard the warning to wear light colored clothing when walking and jogging at night.
A solution would be infra red detectors but they would be less effective on hot, sunny days.
I can think of another solution but it would be problematic.
I bought a black parka instead of my usual light enough to be seen tan. I made sure to buy a yellow vest to keep in my car in case I had to get out on the roadside.

Will all-white color cars be forbidden as “racism by automobile”?
Black and white animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc). will have to have the “white” cut out because it represents “white animal privilege”?

Now we need “universal background checks” before we can buy one of the assault-cars. They’ll put limits on size of the gas tanks and how many gallons you can have too. We’ll need to form the National Car Association to lobby for us for the right to keep and bear cars.....

This is hilarious. I had to check it to make sure it wasn’t an onion piece. No I don’t want black people to get run over but you just know all the Shaniqua’s and Tayshaun’s of the world see this as more evidence of the white man’s inheritant racism.

Visual object detection methods work best with light-colored objects against a darker background. They also work fairly well with dark-colored objects on a lighter background. Dark-on-dark does not go as well and takes longer. Milliseconds count here.
That Black person, wearing a dark-colored hoodie jacket, walking across a stretch of black asphalt may not be "seen" by the camera system of that automatic car coming down the road.
Maybe he should wear a gaudy outfit to improve the odds of being seen.
Maybe the Engineers will keep working on the problem and solve it.
