Claims that a post-Brexit trade deal with the US would lead to chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-pumped beef arriving on supermarket shelves are "inflammatory and misleading" smears, the US ambassador to Britain has said.
In a strongly worded rebuke to critics of a proposed deal, Woody Johnson dismissed negative claims over agriculture as "myths" concocted by "people with their own protectionist agenda".
The billionaire diplomat, whose fortune derives from the Johnson & Johnson dynasty, said a transatlantic trade deal would provide a "great opportunity" for both countries.
"But the British public has been led to believe otherwise," he wrote in an article for the Daily Telegraph.
"You have been presented with a false choice: either stick to EU directives, or find yourselves flooded with American food of the lowest quality. Inflammatory and misleading terms like 'chlorinated chicken' and 'hormone beef' are deployed to cast American farming in the worst possible light.

Television adverts warning people to take action to prepare for a no-deal Brexit are to be shown on television, the UK’s top civil servant has revealed.
Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill made the announcement days after a shock report revealed how little the public is prepared for the country to crash out of the EU.
On Tuesday the Government admitted 200,000 firms that trade with the EU are not ready for a no-deal departure, which is still possible.
The study from the Brexit department also found citizens are ignoring no deal warnings and failing to make sure they are ready for a no deal.
In the US, producers adhere to a “Defect Levels Handbook,” which sets out the maximum number of foreign bodies like maggots, insect fragments and mould that can be in food products before they are put on the market.
For example, US producers are allowed to include up to 30 insect fragments in a 100-gram jar of peanut butter; as well as 11 rodent hairs in a 25-gram container of paprika; or 3 milligrams of mammalian excreta (typically rat or mouse excrement) per each pound of ginger.
Wilbur Ross, Trump’s Secretary of Commerce, has previously said that scrapping strict EU standards in areas like food hygiene and agriculture would be a “critical component” to any post-Brexit UK-US free trade deal.
