Do people lose farms like this?
Yes, they surely do.
The seventies were a harsh time for farmers(maybe this is what inspired "Johnny Cougar"
Trapped between rising fuel prices, falling crop prices and callous pols like Nixon's Secretary of Agriculture, Earl 'Get Big or Get Out" Butts, lots of farmers took on a lot of debts that they couldn't pay off and they lost their familial lands to Big Farm (industrial farming)
That's why Jimmuh Carter got their votes. Surprise, surprise, he was no better and the Russia boycotts he put in place killed off a lot more farmers who got stuck with a bumper harvest of wheat they could sell nor eat.
Then Reagan came along and the economy improved a little bit.
Our farm suffered during this time as we couldn't re invest in equipment and sold off some land and drawn down on bank account my grandfather accumulated during the bumper years of the fifties and sixties. to stay afloat.
We doing alright but nervous about what Trump is doing. We're still with him but "hope is a good breakfast but a poor supper."

So farmers have economic stress on top of physical toil.
