Trump calls a timeout at Hanoi summit, sends Kim back to Pyongyang to persuade his generals

Media jackals predictably are braying that President Trump failed at the Hanoi summit. Nothing could be further from the truth. President Trump wisely sent North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-un back to Pyongyang from Hanoi, where he can tell the generals and security police commanders, on whose support he depends, that they are not going to get sanctions relief without giving up their nuclear arsenal.

There is every sign that this outcome in Hanoi is a predictable stage in the process of obtaining consensus among the North Korean ruling class that they must give up on the strategy of confrontation and isolation, with their survival guaranteed solely by nukes, and instead open up to the outside world and the prosperity market economies can generate.

But, of course the Trump-hating media have leaped to the conclusion that the summit was a huge failure because President Trump sent Chairman Kim back home to Pyongyang with the message that ending the sanctions will require complete, verifiable denuclearization.

AP rushed to judge the talks a failure, headlining, “Trump, Kim summit collapses amid failure to reach deal,” in a dispatch that took 6 reporters as authors or contributors to publish. It called the premature end to the talks “a dispiriting end to high-stakes meetings meant to disarm a global threat.”

This is pure propaganda.

President Trump abundantly signaled that he is not in a hurry for a deal – any deal – at the expense of getting a suboptimal result. He set the expectation that, while optimistic about eventually getting to his goal of denuclearization, it might be a longer process than the short attention span media would prefer.

A better deal, closer to the 2020 election, serves Trump’s purposes well.

Meanwhile, the situation has become much more calm than previously.

The corrupt media needs to be overthrown.

They do - but I have no idea how that could ever be accomplished, since there are literally schools full of leftist “journalists” waiting in line to take their place.

It’s gotten so bad that even if President Trump somehow manages to build the wall, I wouldn’t be surprised if the media simply doesn’t report it, so the sheeple have literally no idea it’s been done.

But if the military and security force commanders see an existential threat to their survival in power, they could still overthrow Kim and install another leader, finding grounds to claim legitimacy.

I know I only excerpted the above quote, but your entire post is an excellent analysis of the situation in the Hermit Kingdom, and thank you for posting it.

It is my opinion that the seizure of however-many thousands of cases of Vodka a couple of days ago was part of Kim jerking the chain of his Generals to show who is really in charge.

Like it or not, any part of Kim giving up his Nukes will have to include some sort of "golden parachute" for NK's top Generals. This "retirement package" may be part of the Trump-Kim negotiations, and why Kim and Trump had to meet face-to-face again.

Trump made Fat Kim a better dictator.

Exactly. I also read that the two parties exchanged food at one of the dinners. Small steps to build mutual trust...and it will take a long time (longer than Gorbachev) to reach a good, verifiable deal.

Hopefully he will have seen enough to maintain his motivation to bring NK in to the modern age, economically.

It’s worth remembering that not just the country’s security but Kim’s own personal safety relies on the NK military. I don’t think they have anything as sophisticated as a 25th Amendment if the military becomes convinced that the head of state is not acting in what they consider to be the national interest. So while he talks big and plays the role of the all-powerful dictator, the people he now must convince are forces to be reckoned with now and for the future of NK.

Excellent post.

Kim is beginning to realize just what is out there beyond his little backwards peninsula off the Chinese mainland. If you really want to know just how backward they are, look up pictures of North Korea at night. The only place lit up like the rest of the world is the capitol city where Kim is.

Viet Nam was a good choice of locations, he was riding around in a $1.2 million car while the average annual income in his country is $3500 at most. Nobody in NK has electricity. The only manufacturing is centered around supporting his military.

And it’s a very good observation that he has to be wary of his generals. They could cook up a coup any time and eliminate him, put someone of their choice in place. His position is very precarious, completely dependent on the loyalty of his generals.

I’ve wondered why that hasn’t happened already. The generals could see his meetings with Trump as a weakness, and possibly a threat to their own money and power, and decide it’s time for a new leader. He must have a better hold on power than I originally thought.

As for Trump’s part, perfect decision. Kim wanted more than Trump was willing to give up, LATER...we’ll talk another time when you realize who’s in charge here...exactly what he said he would do long ago, he’s always said he would walk away if he didn’t like the way it was going. He did exactly what he said. As usual.

Never underestimate Donald J Trump.

Vietnam is now a major exporter of rice and less-quality robusta coffee. That country is now investing in growing higher-quality arabica coffee and could be a major threat to Brazil and eastern Africa as a major coffee exporter.

“The young dictator depends on the loyalty of the commanders of troops and police who have the weapons that could overthrow him and install someone more to their liking.”

In truth, this is 100% the case with all dictators. It’s a tightrope. One minute you’re Ceausescu running the nation with total power, the next, you’re getting shot against the wall.

Every dictator lives in constant fear of losing control, and it’s a realistic fear. One day we could easily wake up and find Kim deposed and shot by an anti-aircraft gun firing squad. No joke

Annnnnd the State Dept troll from Tokyo checks in.

His advisors were not leading here, this was pure Trump. If anything he explained it to them. None of those people you named have had the slightest leadership on the issue.

“would have been that the Norks were suggesting, without truly giving up the nukes (which we already know from Congressional testimony from DNI, CIA, DIA is true”

We “know that is true” from the same agencies who are trying to overthrow Trump, talking to Congress, and BOTH do NOT want to see him succeed in Korea. /s

But thanks for playing.

Anything Trump knows likely came from outside the criminals in American intelligence. The CIA and the rest are filled with Brennans and Marie Harfs.

The MSM stooges were worse on Reagan at Reykjavik. Then is was “crazed warmongering cowboy kills promise of peace as he rebukes reasonable Gorbachev’s outstretched hand”. Rather than eating those words they simply forgot them when Gorbachev returned, hat in hand, to make peace.

All that is true about Vietnam...and..they have a bit of a disliking toward China, having fought a way with China back in the late 70s.

Basically in 1986 Vietnam admitted that Communism doesn’t work.

They are still autocratic, but they have a market economy.

In a recent poll of countries where people were asked about the positives of Capitalism, it came out that the most “pro-capitalist” country in the world was Vietnam, despite the government.
