Amazon has placed a high-profile Seattle office project on the sublease market, signaling plans to scale down its growth in its hometown.
A marketing flier obtained by GeekWire confirms that the tech giant is seeking new tenants for its office space in Rainier Square, a building under construction that will one day be the city’s second-tallest skyscraper. Amazon had leased all 30 floors of office space in the building. After weeks of rumors, the listing was made official over weekend, according to real estate brokers familiar with the marketing efforts. Amazon will make all of the office space it leased in Rainier Square available to other companies.
The skyscraper project, once an emblem of Amazon’s ambitions in Seattle’s urban core, now becomes a symbol of its uncertain future in its hometown. The move follows Amazon’s decision to back out of its HQ2 project in New York City after opposition there, amid signs that the company will focus its Seattle-area growth in nearby Bellevue, Wash.
Real estate company JLL is listing the space on the company’s behalf, according to the flier.
Earlier this month, a real estate broker who represents tenants in downtown Seattle told GeekWire that Apple, Dropbox, and Oracle were “circling” as possible tenants for Rainier Square, which is located at 4th and Union Street.
Amazon pulling out of Rainier Square follows the company’s surprise decision to nix plans to open a 25,000-person office in New York. Earlier this month, Amazon canceled its New York “HQ2,” blaming elected officials who vowed to fight the deal.
The New York resistance effort mirrored opposition Amazon faces in Seattle. It’s not hard to draw a line between the battles; two Seattle City Councilmembers traveled to New York to warn Amazon opponents about what it’s like to have the company in your backyard.

Amazon currently occupies 12 million square feet of office space in Seattle and has several additional projects under construction. The company will “continue to evaluate future growth” when those projects are finished, an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire previously.

Once Amazon moved into Rainier Square it would be effectively held hostage to the demands of the Leftist leeches. For the same reason, Amazon made the right move in pulling out of NYC.
He has a family and can't do the city center loft thing.
That is the problem Amazon has to deal with. Are they going to cater to the millennials working for them only? Or are they going to think about the people with families and their non-loft living conditions.
Yeah, everyone likes to do an uptown experience, but some people, because of their responsibilities can't live uptown.
The Marxist criminals that run Seattle (Havana on the Sound) despise business and profit. They care more about junkie bums and losers that poop on the sidewalk and assault citizens.
Reality sucks for amazon.
Maybe Alexandria Ocrazio-Cortex was a convenient excuse for Amazon to back out of it’s New York deal as well?
Dumb question that occurred to me last fall when I was touring Manhattan.
Most all these jobs involve sitting at a computer.
Why do thousands of them need to be housed in a giant expensive inconvenient beehive of humanity?
Except aren't all tech companies run by and staffed by leftist leeches?
They could move to the heartland, but they would find it difficult to hire Marxist workers.

Amazon is coming to realize that these liberal run cities aren’t all they’re cracked up to be for anyone trying to run a business. Imagine how the little businesses feel.

I'm not so sure I'd characterize the NYC events as a "surprise decision." If anything, I'd say the original decision to locate there was the bigger surprise. Remember -- Amazon originally set out to find a city to host its "HQ2" operation, then came out of nowhere and selected TWO "HQ2" locations.
The leftist loons that run Seattle will learn the first maxim of capitalism the hard way: money goes where it is well treated and leaves where it is not.

is there a reason for them to work in the same place, because of staff meetings, working with coworkers on projects, needing to be located near corporate headquarters for meetings with top management?
I don’t know how Amazon is structured, but you bring up some good points. If they mainly need a desk and computer to run reports and input data, review information, etc. why do they need to be in expensive office space?
Amazon is competing with companies like Facebook, Oracle and Google for talent. I don't think most of the people who work for these companies have any interest in living in Dubuque, Iowa.

Well, we all through phases in life. For young twenty something yuppies, city living in an upscale neighborhood with bars and nightclubs and restaurants could seem an exciting way to live. Those of us with more life experience vote with our feet and live elsewhere.
