Critics call for John Wayne Airport to be renamed after interview resurfaces

Critics are calling for the John Wayne Airport in Southern California to be renamed after a 1971 "Playboy" interview resurfaced this week.

A Los Angeles Times opinion piece from earlier this week highlighted opinions the former movie star voiced in the interview on black people, gay people and Native Americans.

Wayne, who was 63 at the time of the interview, said he believed in "white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility."

He also mentioned "tests" which proved black people did not have "requisite background" to attend college.

When asked which films he called "perverted," Wayne listed 1969’s “Easy Rider” and “Midnight Cowboy,” before using anti-gay slurs to discuss the films.

Wayne said that Native Americans were "were selfishly trying to keep" the U.S. "for themselves."

“Orange County today is such an economically and ethnically diverse community that it’s hard to justify asking any member of that community to board planes at an airport named after an outspoken racist and homophobe, with his strutting statue occupying a central niche in front of the concourse,” columnist Michael Hiltzik wrote for the LA Times.

Some have come to Wayne's defense, saying that it is unfair to call out an interview from 50 years ago.

“Removing his name from Orange County’s airport now only validates what many Americans are coming to believe: You can’t say anything anymore, darn it, without being discovered and punished by the mob,” Madeline Fry wrote in the Washington Examiner.

***Martin Luther King, Jr. referred to homosexuality as a perversion.***

So did William L. Shirer, in his massive work, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, when mentioning the S.A. thugs.

The thing is, inside the Soviet Union itself, homosexuals were persecuted harshly. However, their agents encouraged it in the West, because they knew it would break down their societies.

I remember reading the John Wayne interview and the Mohammed Ali interview back then.

I still remember most of it, but I can’t remember the centerfolds! And when I cant remember the centerfolds you can bet the articles were really important!

Is it true that John Wayne always had an apple pie in his saddlebag?

Yes, because the McDonalds out west weren’t reliable suppliers.

It didn’t “surface”. It was dug up.

The real question is who did the research to dig up this article from a half-century ago and why.

“Wayne, who was 63 at the time of the interview, said he believed in “white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.” “

Wasn’t this the reason Democrats gave for backing the communist Viet Cong and NVA?

“Those little brown people aren’t educated enough yet for Democracy!”

““Share the Wealth”?(Indians were “land rich”)”

Well, sort of... but due to archaic federal laws regarding tribal land ownership and inheritance, most Indian land is owned by up to several hundred distantly related tribal members (many of whom don’t know they own any land at all) and you need permission from every single one of them to either buy it or pursue any sort of economic development on it.

“Critics call for John Wayne Airport to be renamed after interview resurfaces”

Resurfaces? Was it banished and just recently smuggled back into the country?

Or is somebody just trying to stir something up because Democrats are always ready to attack American heroes and Republican politicians will run away three times before the cock can crow.

George Washington or Abraham Lincoln I’d say. Maybe Jackie Kennedy because of what she said.

I read the interview online maybe 15 years ago and have seen links to it circulated in various places online since then. Playboy interviews of famous people really aren’t all that obscure, even if they are a few decades old. The only difference now is that the right sissy either saw or remembered it at the right moment to whip the snowflakes into a frenzy.

You’ll have to write a history of this area - very sad, indeed. I gave up on NJ and Newark in particular after that horrendous murder in the parking lot at Short Hills Mall at Christmas time by Newark ghetto rats, remember? It broke my heart and so disheartened me. That’s when I knew I was finished with this state.

In all the time I’ve passed the Lautenberg station, I’ve never seen any but a hand full of people get on. That’s what made me say: BOONDOGGLE!! Perhaps I was not traveling at the right time; I no longer do rush hour.

I think of my lovely parents who left New York City for NJ in 1960 because of the low taxes and family-friendly atmosphere. My dad worked for Western Electric in Newark.

“Lets add FDR to that list since he nominated a KKK member to the SCOTUS and Margaret Sanger too. The founders of what they believe in were also racists.”

I’m sure that the Japanese-Americans might like to say something on that subject also, but they are probably too polite, and have enough sense to realize that it was 75 years ago and times were different.
