Indeed. My mom tells me that they used to laugh at Hitler when she was a kid. Americans had no idea of the horrors to come.

You are right and should be listened to. The denial today is like the Jews who said “this can’t be happening in the cultural leader of the world, Germany. It will work out somehow. People won’t let the Hitler political minority increase their power after a few weeks.”
Very few people can see into the future farther than a short time. I used to take it for granted that everyone was like me but I was wrong. I almost never live in the present moment (the New Age “mindfulness” thing). I read a lot of history and I used to be a science fiction book review columnist and nonfiction book author. I often extrapolate into the future about politics and social trends.
I see a dark, bleak future arriving shortly. We must work to avoid that “probable future” timeline as it could be called.
Take the communists (”Democrats” or “Socialists”) seriously.
