It looks like app developers have found it lucrative to package up info about their users, and share it with Facebook. Note: the apps do this regardless of whether you are a Facebook user.

Increasingly, apps grab info they have no business needing, such as your location at the time you use the app.

And one of the biggest customers for all that personal data which Facebook and other tech giants collect about you? The Deep State, via the PRISM program:

Documents indicate that PRISM is "the number one source of raw intelligence used for NSA analytic reports", and it accounts for 91% of the NSA's internet traffic acquired under FISA section 702 authority."

The issue for many people is that we have no relationship with facebook and have never agreed to any tos. What right do they have to invade our privacy or accumulate data on us? When others give them their contact lists, fakebook uses that to acquire our info and then tie it to all other data they acquire. I do not give consent and have never given fakebook consent to use my info. To me this is the most abusive violation of privacy and this needs to stop.

The government is not supposed to establish huge databases on the public - fears of “big brother.” It doesn’t have to. All it has to do is search in the databases that have already been established: “credit” “bureaus”, facebook, google, twatter, and lo and behold there is everything that anyone could possibly want to know, including SSN, DOB, sex, skin color, salary, jobs, home address, etc.

We are already under the iron hand of big brother.

There’s plenty other ways for that information to be gathered, so while Facebook IS evil, avoiding FB is not a panacea. I don’t use the FB app, and only view FB pages on a PC like any other web page, which doesn’t eliminate the spying either, but it minimizes it.

The social-media giant collects intensely personal information from many popular smartphone apps just seconds after users enter it, even if the user has no connection to Facebook, according to testing done by The Wall Street Journal. The apps often send the data without any prominent or specific disclosure, the testing showed.

IIRC, this has been known for at least a few years now. It's been proven time and again that even without a facebook account, facebook collects data on literally everyone on the web.

You can take a perfectly "virgin" computer with no OS installed on it, format the drive, install the OS and start browsing the Internet with it. Within an hour that computer will have a facebook cookie on it which tracks and reports their every move. Cookies from Yahoo, Google, Amazon and others all make their cookies readable to facebook also who collects and aggregates that data building a user profile.

That user profile gets tagged and TRACKED across multiple devices including desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones smart-watches, fitness trackers, etc..

It is damn' near inescapable getting tracked by facebook on the internet and it all happens without anyone's express consent.

This shit needs to stop, faceboook needs to get busted by FedGov, fined heavily and shut down. Just my opinion of course and I'd typically never say the Government should interfere in anything however this is one case where it absolutely should.

It might not even be the apps doing it. If you put private information into an app, and it stores it; whether locally in a cookie, or in the app itself, unless there is really good security already implemented, Facebook or partners working for them can crawl through app sites and read collected data, or databases, or even when you make a connection and they scan your cookies and browsing content/history files.

Of course, most apps have a EULA to use their app, that often say they have the right to share your data with...anyone they choose to.

Even Free Republic has a cookie that saves your username and password so you don’t have to log in every time you go to the site.

I'm so tired of shouting why FB is evil.

Gosh, their founder and CEO is a megalomaniac, a misogynist, a weaponized autist -- what could go wrong?

Inevitably, there will be 4 or 18 or 351 Freepers chiming in on this thread, "Ah only user it fer pikshures of the grankids."

Just totally incognizant of the massive, total, complete data collection of their everyday lives.

If Facebook were to come to their front door and say,

"Hi, I'm from Facebook, I already know everything about you. I know about your instant message argument with your ex-wife, I know about your proclivities, I know who you backed in every election, I know you're a Freeper!, I know how much time you spend on FreeRepublic.com!, I know how much you GIVE JIM ROB!"
they would be thrown off the front porch or worse.

But as long as that scenario doesn't happen in real life, Freepers don't give a shit.

So, know what? If Freepers don't get off Facebook, and yet gather here to wonder why so many BigData companies like insurance and credit and charities always seems to know so much more about them already, or why those WholeLifeScam™ direct mailers talk about your kids & grandkids by name, I don't give a shit anymore.
