Thousands of people who pass over the Golden Gate Bridge likely didnt notice the four new metal protrusions on its western and eastern flanks. Kymberlyrenee Gamboa did.
For the Fair Oaks resident, the four support beams were evidence that the bridges ambitious suicide barrier was actually beginning to take form a project Gamboa and her family had wished was already completed before her 18-year-old son, Kyle, jumped off the bridge five years ago and died.
It was pretty emotional for everybody that has been involved to actually physically see something out there, Kymberlyrenee Gamboa said. Because it does take so much time with the planning and with the design and with the fabrication before you actually see something on the bridge that says, Hey, this project is actually moving forward.
At a size of more than 380,000 square feet and costing about $200 million, the barrier is set to be completed in January 2021.
This is the largest suicide deterrent net installation in the world, especially in the country, said Ewa Bauer Furbush, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation Districts chief engineer. It is a technically complex project that requires a lot of effort from all vendors of the project team that are involved in bringing this to completion. We cant build it fast enough
The suicide net, which will be located 20 feet below the top deck on each side of the bridge and extend 20 feet out, seeks to address a longstanding suicide problem that has existed since the bridges opening in 1937.
Steven Miller, the bridge districts bridge manager, said an estimated 1,700 people have killed themselves by jumping off the bridge since its construction.

So, it is OK to spend $200 million to protect people from killing themselves (1,700 over many years), but..
Not OK to spend billions to build a “barrier” to protect US Citizens from criminals here illegally from other countries.
Makes sense in a California left wing sort of way.
Life is good in san fran!
Couldn’t the jumpers just jump down to the net and then crawl off to the side and jump off the net into the water?
I’ve walked across that bridge a few times, there are mounted call boxes every 10 yards or so linked directly to a suicide hotline.
If somebody wants to murder themselves they’ll find a way to do it. A bridge might be convenient but so is sucking on a shotgun barrel.
Perhaps not having a net or device has become a litigation issue.
Yes, the article says that a determined jumper can still go off after falling onto the barrier, but that it gives officers a chance to intervene.
“Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier starting to take shape...”
“Tear down the barrier, tear down the barrier....”
Ironical.
They should put in a fast lane for leftists.
How many times did he say ‘proud progressive’?
So what's the problem?
oops wrong thread
Falling from that height onto water isn’t much different than falling from that height onto concrete. Those who survive will suffer multiple broken bones, internal injuries and will most most likely spend the rest of their lives paralyzed or in a wheelchair. The Golden Gate bridge attracts a lot of suicidal people every year, and there are dozens of fatalities every year - I’m amazed it’s taken this long to put up barriers. If someone is bent on suicide, there are far less painful ways to go.
Parents must not have liked her when they named her.
‘these people’ are worth more alive than dead to the ruling class ..
Good point.
California wants to preserve the lives of people who want to kill themselves, but have no problem endangering the rest of the population with an open border.
Go figure.
Building a barrier is immoral!!! It’s their right to jump off the bridge.
Not sure I get what the problem is.
I would prefer suicide platforms with a little toll gate. As they say, "If you want to reduce something, tax it."
Makes sense in a California left wing sort of way.
200 million would buy enough “Do not jump off Bridge” signs
to build a barrier eight feet high on both sides of the
bridge.
For a lot less they could install a set of steps every
fifty feet.
Isn’t this discrimination against people who identify as suicidal?
