Republicans in California: Can the GOP Survive?
Commonwealth Club ^ | February 5, 2019 | Commonwealth Club

Posted on 02/15/2019 5:53:26 PM PST by SFmom

A panel discussion of California Republicans: Catherine Baker, FORMER Assemblywomen R-16; Kevin Faulkoner, Mayor of San Diego; Kristin Olsen, FORMER Minority Leader, California State Assembly, etc. etc.; Matt Shupe, Director John Cox for Governor and Chair of Republican party in Contra Costa county (East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area); Snarky Moderator Scott Shafer, KQED (PBS) Senior Political editor. All discussed how evil Trump was and how he cost them their races! I attended and feel obligated to report on this pathetic exercise.

There was great irony that this sorry panel discussion fell on the day President Trump delivered his SOTU which was so enthusiatically received around the country. The Commonwealth Club scrambled to put up the SOTU speech prior to the event, but the SOTU began at 6PM here and the panel was scheduled to begin at 6:30PM. The crowd was largely Republican, especially at 5:30PM when anyone who wanted to watch the SOTU coverage on the big screen was invited to do so. Lots of cheers for the President and outright roaring laughter at the sour faces of the Democrats during the 30 minutes we were allowed to watch the speech. Crowd was really disappointed when the program began and the SOTU was turned off. Baker and Olsen heaped blame on President Trump for their defeats. Baker repeatedly said that the Republican brand was tainted and toxic. Olsen said that she saw no hope for the CA GOP as long as Trump was in office! Shupe and Faulkoner were not as stupid nor as cynical. I did not realize that most of our California candidates were Never-Trumpers. No wonder they lost!

You have Elitist GOP RINOS in California who think like Dems, so there is really no point in calling them Republicans

Not as long as they continue to be slightly less liberal Democrats on a statewide level.

What California needs is a party to compete with the Dems.
And that won’t be the GOP.

It must come from the left, and will probably be something socialist that doesn’t sound too socialist. Like the People’s Party or the Greens.

“Can the GOP Survive?”

Not as long if vote harvesting continues. The reason the Dems want open borders and giving illegals drivers licenses is so they can register them to vote at that time... and help them fill it out of course.

the R party has committed suicide due to nominating a couple of very poor governors (since Reagan), one of whom at least was patently corrupt..........and then the GOP never ever stands up seriously for anything worthwhile...not even traditionally conservative or moral principles....

they appear to only stand for themselves, nothing there to interest or motivate the voters

and most of them now don’t even bother campaigning much

you want to see textbook cases of non-campaigning, capitulating before the race is even begun? Go look at much of the GOP-e in the once-great state of Californication

as was once posed, “there’s no there, there!”

Thank you for your report. We live in California and voted for John Cox, thinking he would fight to win Governor’s race. He.did.not. We knew he voted for Johnson, not Trump in the presidential, but were hoping against hope that he had seen the light about President Trump. I guess not. This makes me boiling mad. Can’t stand never Trumpers, they are worse than our insane California Dems.

The CA Democrat party is full of extremists and they worry about Trump? That may be why they’re in trouble. Unapologeticaly run against the corrupt Democrats and maybe they will win.

It's no problem because we don't bother voting for any of those rotten political posers. Never again!

Crazy funny! The Republican Party, as per Mitt Romney, the Bushes, and John McCain, died a long time ago. No issues, no priniciples, no exciting candidates (except for Hunter) and no guts. The Democrats crushed them and I’m frankly amazed there’s enough of them to fill a room.

Downright cute that their “leaders” still reject President Trump - too bad; he’s the best thing to come down the pike since Ronald Reagan. Come to think of it, “Republicans” didn’t like him either.

Yep, “what GOP”? There hasn’t been a Republican party in California since Ronald Reagan. Deukmejian, Wilson, Schwarzenegger have all been complete failures. I have many Democrat friends who hate the invasion by illegal aliens, and they will not vote for any Republican. They will accept the invasion rather than vote for a Republican. California is done. I’m working on an exit strategy.

The Republican party in California talking about how to turn things around is like the crew of the Titanic trying to get the boilers going as it sinks to Davey Jones locker.

we is in a horrible downward spiral

What has Olson ever achieved? She was a GOP legislative leader - did she lead them to greater strength, or weakness?

They should rally real conservatives in the rural districts first. Make those solid red. Then work into the suburbs.

Didn’t know it was still alive there to survive.

It is going to have to be reborn in new image. The old guard doesn’t appeal and doesn’t teach people why conservative policies are best. Cliche’ campaigns can’t work assuming people understand the difference...and that is not just in California where that is a problem. Newer, fresh faces are also very much needed.

With the jungle primary system...here’s another possibility: Conservatives run as Democrats - essentially turn the Dem party label into a non-partisan ballot - possibly making the campaign about ideas between the two candidates and not just a party label. Then the Dems would probably move to scrap the system. They did it to get one party control - but if conservatives were to get elected under their party label they’d soon move to do away with it.
