Notch another victory for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The freshman Democratic representative celebrated online retailer Amazon’s decision Thursday to scrap its plans to build a new headquarters in her New York City district.
“I think it’s incredible,” Ocasio-Cortez responded when asked to comment on Amazon’s about-face. “It shows that everyday Americans still have the power to organize and fight for their communities and they can have more say in this country than richest man in the world.”
Earlier Thursday, the company announced it was reversing the plan, announced in November, to build new East Coast headquarters buildings in New York City and in Arlington, Virginia. The Virginia part of the plan will go ahead. The company said it would not look for a new location to replace the cancelled $2.5 billion project.
"After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” Amazon spokeswoman Jodi Seth said in a statement.
Ocasio-Cortez was one of the leaders of the fight against the proposed deal, largely over the $3 billion in tax breaks the city and state promised the company.
New York’s chronic shortage of housing and the overburdened mass transit system were also cited by opponents.
The deal would have meant an estimated 25,000 new jobs for the city.

You’ve cited all the usual rationales for such corporate welfare. The same points are used to excuse bidding wars of subsidies for boondoggles everywhere. For instance, they’ve been used to justify heavy subsidies for just about every major-league stadium, and every Olympics games. They were used to justify bailouts for the auto industry, and are still being used to justify all sorts of subsidies for “green energy”, electric cars, etc.
BTW, even proponents, such as yourself, must agree that the federal government will collect the same taxes, regardless of where, in the USA, Amazon sites its new headquarters.
These are people getting a government check. They thrive on envy but have no interest in looking for jobs. Did she shoot down a rich guy, yes. Will this effect her constituents, no. She's good.
She didnt blow off 25K jobs, she is pleased that her base didnt have to pay billions of dollars in giveawys.
VERY VERY TRUE, the people in these not so nice neighborhoods would have been able to receive TOP DOLLAR for their properties and jobs would have been great for those without college educations, HOWEVER what the hell does she care she now has a job making almost 200,000 a year WITH all the best benefits available on the planet!!! Her base doesn’t PAY TAXES, her base would NOT have to pay one penny for the tax give aways to Amazon, her base lives off the government!!! The small business owners in the area would have really benefited from extra business in the area!!! This guarantees AOC will remain in her cushy job by keeping the community a SLUM AREA!!!

The 3 billion given to Amazon WAS NOT money it was tax revenue that would not be collected for a period of time she can’t be this STUPID!!!

All NY is doing is forgoing the collection of revenues directly from Amazon. EVERYONE else (supporting business/enterprise, Amazon employees etc.) will pay big. As will everyone/everything that supports them.
The average salary of those 25,000 new employees will be $100+K per year.
That is $2.5bil PER YEAR in new income for this Congressional district. That’s enormously beneficial no matter what else occurs. Every small business and every public service in the district would feel a very big, positive impact immediately.
