Ocasio-Cortez takes a victory lap after Amazon scraps plans to build in New York

Notch another victory for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The freshman Democratic representative celebrated online retailer Amazon’s decision Thursday to scrap its plans to build a new headquarters in her New York City district.

“I think it’s incredible,” Ocasio-Cortez responded when asked to comment on Amazon’s about-face. “It shows that everyday Americans still have the power to organize and fight for their communities and they can have more say in this country than richest man in the world.”

Earlier Thursday, the company announced it was reversing the plan, announced in November, to build new East Coast headquarters buildings in New York City and in Arlington, Virginia. The Virginia part of the plan will go ahead. The company said it would not look for a new location to replace the cancelled $2.5 billion project.

"After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” Amazon spokeswoman Jodi Seth said in a statement.

Ocasio-Cortez was one of the leaders of the fight against the proposed deal, largely over the $3 billion in tax breaks the city and state promised the company.

New York’s chronic shortage of housing and the overburdened mass transit system were also cited by opponents.

The deal would have meant an estimated 25,000 new jobs for the city.

LOL

What’s incredible is opportunities, jobs and taxes that will never appear.

I honestly don't believe Senior Democrats fully realize the damage this woman and her ilk are doing to their brand.

Blinded with pride they do not care how bad they look.

So, let us rejoice!

Wow, the Stupid is STRONG in this one. Damn, at least the actual liberals from decades ago understood that more jobs were better. They didn’t know jack about what to do to make an environment conducive to creating those jobs, but they weren’t so damned stupid as to actively chase those jobs away.

If I was one of her constituents who was looking forward to a job building that HQ, or working there after it was done, I’d throw a pie in her face.

Actually a smart GOP campaign ad staff would point out how much of a tax burden the Amazon deal and resultant Corporate Welfare (in the form of tax-breaks to a company currently in it’s 2nd year of paying no income tax) would pass on to taxpayers.
Most voters care about taxes and notice when our politicians give millions of dollars or more in tax breaks to corporate entities and then force the rest of the tax base to make up for the loss in increased taxes.
No welfare for Illegals and No welfare for multi-million/multi-billion dollar corporations!
If us citizens have to pay our taxes then so should they!

“She does have a point about the corporate welfare (3 giga-bucks in tax breaks).”

No, actually she doesn’t. She doesn’t understand that those tax breaks will employ 25,000 people, who will:

1) Earn pretty good money, which will produce tax revenue for NYS and NYC (not to mention the fed.gov, of which she is a part);

2) Spend most of the rest of that money which, via the multiplier effect, will produce TONS of economic growth (and, thus, tons of extra taxes for NYC, NYS and the feds); and

3) that more services will be necessary to the lives of those people - such as clothing stores, gas stations, grocery stores, auto dealers, restaurants, etc., etc., etc.

The simple fact is that anywhere a company as large as Amazon goes, it is GOING to get tax breaks...because the economic growth that they MUST bring to that area will much more than offset those initial breaks. Oh, and those breaks are simply “we won’t collect those taxes that you would otherwise generate IN THE FUTURE” - IOW, there is no actual expenditure of those funds.

Am I missing something here or does she sound off the chart nuts

Hey, this is exactly the way that Venezuela progressed to where they are now. She's a visionary--as long as your vision is misery.

Why shouldn’t companies like Amazon be FORCED to pay taxes like the rest of us?

Uh, you realize that Amazon would have been paying payroll taxes on those 25,000 employees, right?

Let's not try to rival AOC in cluelessness, ok?

“No reason to think next time will be different.”

Reasons number 1 through 100:

1. Donald Trump.

2. Donald Trump.

3-99 Donald Trump.

100. Donald Trump.

In case you missed it over the last 3 years, Donald Trump is not exactly your typical RINO or Fredocon. Just saying.

This should be a MAJOR, MAJOR component of the GOP campaign ads of 2020.

Ha! You are assuming the Republicans are different from the Democrats. They are not. It's the Uni-party.

“lieberals screwing over liberals, I like it!”

I am savoring THIS MOMENT! In an age where the level of “Extreme” defines your worthiness, the new left devours the previous version of “new left”. Cuomo and DeBlasio were no longer extreme enough. Cortez is the NEW extreme left. They will devour each other until we have Stalinist Gulags. Then and only then will those who retain arms decide what is worth fighting for.
