Maine Has Been Hit By A “Silver Tsunami”: Population Plummeting!

The state of Maine has earned yet another distinction this year, beyond their recent victories over Canada in the lobster wars. But this accomplishment doesn’t really have anyone celebrating. The Pine Tree State has joined West Virginia as the only two to have more people dying annually than being born. The implications of this should be obvious and it doesn’t spell good news for the state’s budget or its growing army of senior citizens. Some have taken to referring to this effect as the “silver tsunami.” (Boston Globe)
But across the state, the rapid aging of Maines population a trend known by some as the silver tsunami has reached a crucial tipping point, many say. As baby boomers head into retirement, and many young people move away in search of opportunity, Maine is one of only two states, along with West Virginia, where deaths now outnumber births.
That gulf is reshaping life here in myriad ways, from shrinking the workforce to intensifying the demand for services for the elderly, and it will only widen in the coming years, demographers predict.
Already, Maine has more residents 65 and older than 18 and younger. By 2026, the number of residents over 65 is expected to skyrocket by 37 percent from its level in 2016, while nearly every other age group declines, partly the consequence of rising life expectancy and falling fertility rates.
Why people are fleeing Maine isn’t as obvious at first glance as the exodus we’re seeing from states like New York. The median income there is around $56K, only slightly below the national average, and their cost of living tends to considerably lower than in the major cities. Maine’s per capita violent crime rate is the lowest in the entire nation. Their unemployment rate is below three percent. The state’s “happiness index” is right about in the middle of the pack, ranked 24th in the nation.
But there clearly must be good reasons for all the young people fleeing, perhaps beginning with their state income tax. (It’s actually higher than New York’s for higher earners.) Maybe it’s the weather. I’ve been to Maine in the winter and it’s no picnic. Or perhaps people just don’t like living so close to Canada.
Whatever the cause, there are more people dying than babies being born to replace them. The only reason Maine isn’t decreasing in population is the large number of immigrants and asylum seekers who continue to arrive.
Maybe the question we need to be answering is why fertility rates are falling all over the country and many parts of the developed world. Part of the answer is probably the fact that marriage rates have been slowly falling for decades. After a slight uptick from 2014-2016, they’re declining again. And those married couples have been producing an average of between 1.8 and 1.9 children each since the 90s. (The average was more than 2.5 in the sixties.) At the same time, the number of children born out of wedlock has been declining also, after peaking at 41% in the late 2000s.
The fact is, we’re just not producing as many people as a country would need to maintain growth at the levels we were previously used to seeing. Overall, that might be a good thing for the planet when you consider that we’re now supporting a vastly larger number of people than we could possibly feed if our technology collapsed. And the impact of nearly eight billion souls on the ecosystem can’t be ignored. But any significant population reduction is going to come with some very serious shrinking pains. Fewer young people working means fewer resources to care for the growing ranks of the elderly.
The solution? Just “having more babies” doesn’t solve it all and it would be rather tough to mandate legislatively. The best advice for the generations coming up through the ranks now would be to start saving for your retirement very early and aggressively. The government won’t be able to take care of everyone for much longer.

That is so 30 years ago. Smaller population no longer serves the lefts immediate interests. Massive immigration and diluting long-standing citizens does meet their agenda

THat’s why Maine needs the Somalis. /S
On a more serious note, I used to live Down East, but hadn’t been there in nearly 40 years, until I visited in 2015. I can tell you, it’s still spread out, but many places are a LOT more built up than the used to be.

Midcoast Maine, and the small villages that dot the waterfront like Camden & Bath & Damariscotta is booming with wealthy retires.
Beautiful place retire. Safe & still affordable. Not as much snow right on the coastline.

I live in Maine’s Second Congressional District.
In area, this CD district covers 80% of Maine, or 27,000+ square miles.
Candidate Donald Trump carried this district by 10 points in 2016, and received one electoral vote as a result.
Maine has an older population because many young people leave the state for job opportunities and higher pay in other states.
The state is also very strong Second Amendment country.

People dont get married because they cant afford it BS
They dont want to afford it. They dont have kids for the same reason.
People have been taught that they have to have the newest and best everything.
People have been taught that they have to have multiple vacations every year.
Having these material good things make being married and having children unaffordable. Having children requires sacrifices of those good things. People dont like sacrifices so they use contraceptives and get abortions.
"I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby," Obama said of his daughters. Well he is not the only parent that thinks that way.
Marriage and children 60 years ago were the greatest good. It was an expectation drilled in to the heads of children that you would grow up, get married and have children.
Now there is even a fear of marriage. Having children is a burden. We value the easy life and material things more than children or producing another generation of our people.
Our culture is in the toilet and swirling the drain.

This winter (here in Maine) has seen more rain than snow, although there is a big snowstorm due to arrive tonight and tomorrow.
Some winters are bad, others are mild.
There is very little snow on the ground at this moment.
The snow usually all melts during April. March is mostly a winter month here. Last March was the worst winter month of the 2017 - 2018 season.

Maybe the question we need to be answering is why fertility rates are falling all over the country and many parts of the developed world. Could it be because Sex in "Modern America" has become far more about one's individual pleasure than a marvelous way to bond husband & wife together to bring God's gift of children into the family and the world.
Perhaps?

The only time I visited Portland was in the early 60s. There seemed to be a lot of old folks and a lot of toddlers. Often the elderly were pushing the baby carriages around or caring for the young. I saw very few young adults. Were they commuting to work somewhere? Had they left all the kids with the grandparents?
Now that those toddlers are approaching retirement age and all the grandparents and many of the parents have died off, who is left?

Maine is a fascinating state. It looks sort of small on a map but it is HUGE and it will take an entire day of driving to go from say Portland to Caribou.
And almost the only thing you will see on that drive will be trees and lakes. There are parts of Maine where you can still get lost and perhaps never get found if you don't keep your wits about you.
As you point out, the winters are long and brutal, especially as you get up north. Summers, short as they are, are made miserable with clouds of mosquitoes, hordes of ticks and about a half dozen types of biting flies including deer flies, horse flies, and the especially fearsome blackfly. By mid-August, you are praying for the cold and snows of winter to return.
It is a generally conservative place though but as with most states in the Northeast, the ghetto cities like Bangor, Lewiston, Augusta, Portland outdo the rural areas with voting, which is 80-90% in favor of Democrats.

I live here in Maine and closely follow the demographics of the state. The article is rife with errors.
It refers vto a three year net positive natural growth that did not happen. Preliminary data showed a one year to positive, But it has been an ever widening dealt a between births and deaths since 2011.
And stop with the trope about the Somalis. Although they have been migrating to Portland and Lewiston, thier numbers in aggregate are minor in terms of overall migration into and out of Maine.

“The Pine Tree State has joined West Virginia as the only two to have more people dying annually than being born.”
I also think this is misleading; many states have more AMERICANS dying annually than being born. Here in NJ we had a Dem governor (Corzine) admit over 10 years ago that we’d lost population without factoring in ILLEGAL immigrants.

No, actually they cant afford it. They and their parents were sold a bill of goods and were told the only way to get ahead was with a college education. They are saddled with huge student loans and they have a degree in womens studies or some other weird thing.
I agree with you that people think they are entitled to the newest and best and that has also crippled an entire generation.
Hollywood has also changed from stories that ended in.....and they got married and lived happily ever after, to....hook up, tragic unhappy lives, and an abortion so they can hook up with someone else.
