..............You can’t just put a drug out on the shelf for people to buy OTC when it takes a medical exam and testing to know whether and how much to take.
*****************
Agreed , but the costs associated with seeing a doctor and getting that rx are enormous and beyond many peoples ability to pay.. many poor countries allow pharmacists to make drug recommendations. Whatever the solution is we need lower costs that allow working poor that do not qualify for medicaid to access healthcare.

I lost most respect for doctors 40 years ago growing up in a rich neighborhood and overhearing their conversations...

My (ex) doctor was more concerned about selling prescriptions for speed (”medical weight loss”) than actually doctoring...

My mother in law died years ago from T2 diabetes complications and now her husband is getting TERRIBLE advice from his “expert” kidney doctor (a low inflammation diet would help more than ALL the pills he’s on)... Doctors just want to keep getting free cruises , seminars in Honolulu and other perks for prescribing metformin and other drugs that cost tens of thousands of dollars a year ... other entities are in on the scheme ,, the American Diabetes Assoc. ... They don’t want to cure T2 diabetes because it makes them too much money... it’s easily cured , often in 45-60 days with nothing but dietary changes.... and the diet the diabetes assoc. endorses only makes the disease worse.

Other countries are not sharing in R&D costs. No way to force them to do so.

There is a lot of debate about what per cent of new drugs come out of academia https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2016/02/02/drugs-purely-from-academia?r3f_986=https://www.google.com/ Maybe it is around 30%, on the other hand the drug companies are paying a lot of universities for some of this research, so who know?

Lowering the price of medicine will not be an easy task.

It starts by prosecuting executives of the pharmaceutical companies for their ongoing and flagrant violations of Wright-Patman and Sherman Antitrust laws. It continues with asset-stripping all those convicted under provisions of RICO laws.

Marching about 50 executives off to jail would permanently lower drug costs for everyone else in the country. There are as few Congressmen who should be sent down as well.

I would nominate the CEO of Mylan, Heather Bresch, and her friends in Congress, to be placed at the head of the action list. They bought a patent on a inexpensive life-saving device and jacked up the price to obscene levels. They also used corrupt relations in Congress to insure monopoly protection for their company, and further got laws passed which required consumption of their product by schools across the country.

Big Pharma spends more on lobbying (e.g renting Congressmen) than they do on research. I have no sympathy for them.

Drug costs here in the US are due to the cost of developing these drugs. If you make the drugs cheaper by government decree, then the incentive to develop new drugs goes out the window. Say goodbye to new drugs.

Exactly. It is analogous to importing cheap labor which stifles the development of technology to improve productivity to reduce labor costs.

Ummm - the ‘decree” is to stop Americans from funding cheaper drugs for others by paying triple at home....
The author is a twit who thinks he’s witty...no doubt how he votes....

And that was my point ... and the reason it will so be difficult to do what you propose.

This topic came up on here a few days ago. One poster provided some pretty frightening information about imported drugs.

A few examples:

https://nowlatestnews.com/2019/02/09/pfizer-japan-recalls-high-blood-pressure-drug-over-cancer-causing-impurity/

https://dailynewsjp.com/2019/02/08/pfizer-japan-recalls-high-blood-pressure-drug-amvalo-due-to-carcinogen-reuters/

Of all the “isms” that are destroying our country, “corporatism” is probably the most unreported and most detrimental. The way that corporations and their lobbying groups can control elected officials, like puppets, is scary and disgusting. Our elected officials pick the winners and losers based on who they’re told to pick by their corporate masters. Drugs that used to cost $100, now cost 3x-4x-5x that, since the implementation of obamacare. A complete pile of trash written by the same people that are profiting off of it.

If the President could one thing, he’d put some legit researchers on how that all played out, start teasing everyone on Twitter and then blow up the farm w/ a press conference. Tell the country how they’re going to modify the patent laws, etc to prevent these games and grant waivers/pardons to any entity that makes the generic.

Big Pharma will shit a pickle.

...which are then sold to other countries at huge discounts, screwing Americans, who pay ridiculous prices.

Not just that, Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare, DoD Pharmacies are all PRE NEGOTIATED PRICES. That are often MORE than the private Insurance industry. Some cheaper to just buy out right.

I had to have SIBO antibiotics 3 times last year, TRICARE BALKED at the script being sent to a Private pharmacy, Retail it’s $1,500 for 14 days. Not that it is the price Tricare pays when gotten through the Military base. Was very surprised our Small base even carried it, as it’s not a common antibiotic.

If it’s not on the Formulary you pay full price.

Declare them all public utilities.

I think the Fake Cherokee actually introduced legislation to that effect.
