The idea of giving poor people cash with no strings attached in lieu of government welfare payments has been floating around the leftist fever swamps since the 1960s. It's called universal basic income and Chicago will apparently develop a pilot program to test it.
Some Chicago families could start collecting a $1,000 check every month with no strings attached. That's the new proposal from a task force created by Mayor Emanuel.
The idea is to break the cycle of poverty. The pilot program would give 1,000 struggling Chicagoans $1,000 a month.
Supporters say people could use the extra cash to cover unexpected emergencies, increase their savings and improve their health.
The money would come from a mix of city funds and charity.
It's a seductive idea. Even some libertarians like Charles Murray think it's worth a shot. With one dollar out of every three spent by the government on social welfare programs going to feed the bureaucracy, the idea of giving the poor direct cash payments seems an attractive way to save taxpayer money.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
Finland ended a similar experiment in April and the results have just been released.
Distributing free money to the unemployed improves their well-being, but doesnt appear to have any significant impact on their job prospects.Thats according to the preliminary results of a landmark experiment in Finland, the first country in the world to trial a basic income at a national level.

Fine with me as long as the money is not coming from me (i.e. federal government).
Not to mention black market gun sales in Chiraq.
The dealers are going to be really happy.
Funny thing...you're not the only one!
That's one thought, I suppose. I'll go with "It will cover cigarettes, beer, and maybe some nice new tattoos."
Absolutely critical to understand this simple fact. Charity is a fixed response to a specific need. This program does not define a need. The foolish notion that giving money to chronically unemployed will somehow inspire a work ethic.
1. People who don’t get it are going to be pissed.
2. The people who get it will complain it isn’t enough.
Well, we all know, already, how this turns out...
What is that word that means doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome each time? Oh Yeah! INSANITY.
... and charity is a voluntary donation to someone perceived to be in need. When tax money goes to taking care of needy people .... refugees, soup kitchens, etc., it is done with money taken under penalty of fine or jail if we don’t pay our taxes.
How about some of our “charitable” organizations create a “poor farm” where these poor people can go to survive in times of need. Get the government out of the welfare business and look for alternatives in the private sector.
Let the poor farms use private sector donated funds, food, clothing, and shelter, and maybe basic health care and security. Give the residents the opportunity to work, learn and improve skills, educate themselves, and develop responsibility, selfworth, and friendships.
Many of the poor have unused skillsets - cooks, laborers (grunts), caregivers etc. to name a few. They just don’t know how or have the opportunity to use them in today’s society. But they could be used on the poor farm.
Seems to me a guaranteed basic income is just adding a $1000 more to each welfare participants income and to the taxpayers burden. Nothing will change and eventually the money will run out.
There will always be “the poor and rich” of this world. And to all the people who have been richly blessed let us remember: where much has been given much is required. Sometimes we forget our blessings in the rat-race to become rich and famous or maintain our lifestyles. But humble yourselves, and know that but for the grace of GOD go thee.
Of course, if you are a member of the Democratic plantation...there is only one choice...increase our taxes and steal more of our treasure to redistribute it until we are the “new poor”.
Let this run for a few months and then heavily audit the program.
Pretty sure bet that a whole grip of people get rounded up for fraud, embezzlement and theft.
That is *always* the point for these programs. They’re just cover for the grift.
LOL!
Government money is NEVER charitable. Those receiving the $1000. stipends will be filing suit against the city when the money ends.
Yeah, that makes sense.
A JOB is the easiest way to “break the cycle of poverty.”
Jobs are easier to find with the low unemployment rate.
This plan is doomed to failure because the recipients have no reason to change their lifestyle.
That’s just crumbs!
“fraud, embezzlement and theft”
Those are the people running the program.
And family members, their political bosses, union bosses, local thug bosses, etc.
Abortion/Infanticide ought to be the top campaign idea for any and all RNC ads in 2020.
WHEN MONEY IS GIVEN TO “THE POOR” IT’S CALLED WELFARE.
WELFARE HAD BEEN TRIED FOR DECADES.
