Some local officials are calling for Bronx City Councilman Ruben Diaz Senior to resign over seemingly homophobic comments.
On the Spanish-speaking radio show "The Relief," Diaz said the City Council is "controlled by the homosexual community."
Although he did not specify who he was referring to, the current City Council speaker is Corey Johnson, who is openly gay and HIV-positive.
Mayor de Blasio took to Twitter, demanding that Diaz apologize. Now, a group of councilmembers is calling for further action.
The City Council LGBT Caucus and Women's Caucus issued a joint statement saying, in part, "We demand he resign from his position effective immediately. It is time that we stick by the pledge we have made to our communities that hate and fear have no place in New York City."
The groups are also asking that the city council standards and ethics committee open an investigation into the matter.
Diaz responded to the controversy on Twitter, saying, "Whats homophobic about saying that the gay community controls the NYC City Council? Im giving them credit for the power and influence they have."
Corey Johnson has also issued a statement on Twitter saying, In the aftermath of Council Member Diaz Sr.'s deeply offensive comments about the LGBTQ community - as well as his indefensible refusal to apologize or even acknowledge the hurt he has caused - many Members have called for disciplinary actions against him and/or his resignation. I feel their anger and their pain. We are currently reviewing all potential disciplinary scenarios. Nothing is off the table
Nothing wrong with what he said. They are moving the bar every day so that now, EVERYTHING you say or don’t say, or do or don’t do is going to be called biased.
He should not resign.
Another member of the council saying basically the same thing would go unnoticed. They are likely trying to get rid of him because he isnt gay.
As I recall, he's pro-life, too. Ol' Ruben been in office almost as long as God, and I don't think he's going anywhere soon.
You don’t have a right to not be offended...
The real question is, did what he say accurately describe the political situation? And if it does, THAT’S TRULY THE PROBLEM.
IF it isn’t, then he’s just a fool with an opinion like most everyone else.
Learn how and when and when NOT to use the apostrophe.
Gay trumps black AND hispanic. He looks black to me.
It seems anytime a prominent gay person in NY has a newspaper interview, public get-acquainted session, or other publicity event, they go out of their way to let everyone know they are gay, such as making a point of referring to my husband, if the speaker is a male, or my wife, if the speaker is female. This is the in thing to do, if not mandatory.
So how come theyre not acting proud to be alluded to as the big wheels on the City Council? Isnt this what Gay Pride and being out is all about? Why are they insulted?
Doesnt make sense.
I seem to have two brains lately. My thinking brain and the one that types faster than the thinking one has time to instruct it.
“AT some point (soon?)”
Wishful thinking. A coupla hundred million thoroughly brainwashed Lemmings......Soon? That would be really nice.
