State of the Union addresses are like appendixes: They may serve a purpose but nobody knows what it is. So there’s always a temptation to insert into them a “moonshot goal” to show you’re doing Big Things.
This year, President Trump’s moonshot was ending HIV transmission in the United States by 2030.

The president’s address moved him substantially to the center of American politics. He has effectively driven the Democrat party so far to the left they will have difficulty regaining a centrist political base.

Exactly. It was a sop to the left, not much more. But by doing that he has captured a HUGE number of the Independents according to the latest poll that puts him over 50%. That is the key to winning 2020.

AIDS is very easy to eradicate for free. It is a disease choice.

True. Most of its spread can be prevented by simply following Biblical rules on sex (only inside marriage) or at least have sex in committed, monogamous relationships, except for gay men who will need to keep “it” out of their partners.

You should have seen what that nasty group did to Reagan. They phototshopped pictures of him with AIDS sores all over his face. Bush Jr increased funding and they left him alone.
Disarming weapons of the left is a good thing. Yes, the slide towards Gomorrah continues, but Trump just made his re-election more secure with that bit of “virtue signalling.”
Its not a “gay only” disease
Plenty of non gay, including children get HIV/AIDS through blood transfusions and blood based products
Treatment costs around $18,300 per year for one person. That is going to run up medical costs for all of us. Then there is the matter of what will we learn in curing HIV that could help us in the future to find cures for other diseases. Finally, HIV has taken a terrible toll on Africa and finding a cure would remove a burden from governments that are struggling already to balance their books while living in close proximity to the terrorists that are trying to overthrow them.
Finding a cure for AIDs seems like a blast from the 80’s but it would be a very good thing to have for a variety of reasons.

I got news for you, son: AIDS is a gay male disease in the USA.
AIDS started out being a Lifestyle Disease, until the Blood Supply was polluted that is.
It reduces his vulnerability to being called "homophobic", without spelling out any actual funding commitment.
