Congress close to a deal on border fencing, and Trump might take it
Washington Examiner ^ | 02/08/2019 | Susan Ferrechio

House and Senate negotiators are closing in on a possible border security agreement that would fund new technology, additional border patrol agents, and likely some kind of fencing in certain areas along the southern border.

There’s no mention of a wall in the deal, per orders of Democratic leaders who vehemently oppose it.

But President Trump seems to be more flexible to whatever the deal entails, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., divulged to lawmakers in a private lunch Thursday.

“I gave a report on meeting with the president and I thought things were on the positive trajectory as far as maybe concluding the funding,” Shelby said. “But we are not there yet.”

Shelby said Thursday afternoon that the next 72 hours would be critical if Democrats and Republicans are to reach a long-sought deal on border security that would also allow passage of seven spending bills and ensure full government funding by a Feb. 15 deadline.

“We’ve got serious negotiations going on,” Shelby said.

The main sticking point is how much money to provide for border barriers and what those barriers will look like.

Democrats appear willing to agree to funding for some new fencing in targeted areas as well as upgrades to existing barriers, they told the Washington Examiner.

The deal is likely to cover far fewer miles than Trump wants, however, and the barriers will be far less robust than the steel slat wall Trump favors.

Shelby would not disclose whether Trump would agree to less than the $5.7 billion he has requested for border barriers, or a wall, as he calls it. But he hinted Trump may be willing to make a deal on price.

which choice is going to turn out best for you; fight alongside the President or take your ball and go home?

From the looks of it neither. I have never been of the opinion that the wall would solve the problem, it is what happens after they cross the border that matters and giving them welfare and resettlement money is not a deterrent.

Jared K. and Mike P. already tried to cave at $1.4B before the shutdown—and it was the GOP in Congress that didn’t go along with that.

Now with Nan running the House Trump is free for as big an open borders cave as he wants. The cheap labor express has won again.

‘It’s not just President Trump’s reelection that is at stake, but the survival of the nation.”

With the crop of DemocRATS that think they’re presidential material, Trump is a shoo-in.

And exactly what tool do we hold?

For one, a public voice, like this forum. We can rally or we can capitulate.

Enough of the Javanka WH .

OT but speaking of Javanka WH, the team is off touring ME countries to sell the financing of their Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.

Just my humble opinion;
I think Trump is setting this gang up
to expose their anti-American agenda,
knowing up front they’ll never come to an
agreement.
He has stated publicly, that he will
not settle for anything less than what
he’s requested. To turn on that, it will
make him look weak. You can bet that he
has plan B,C,and D lined up.

We could try the Vlad Tepes System at one of the higher trafficed parts of the border.

A field of impaled GOPe rotting in the sun might work as a deterrent.

I hear ya!

Just look at the Freepers who get their nose out of joint with anyone critiquing when he goes leftist like this. If the base just sits on their hands, of course he’s going to listen and follow along when Javanka nudge him into the center.

His apparent “growth” on immigration indeed will be the end of the country.

I understand your sentiments exactly.

Him taking a wrecking ball to the propaganda organs and political correctness is way more than any other scared-of-their-shadows republican would have dared do.

The people that have failed us are all the gutless “dignified” Republicans and genteel conservatives unwilling to get their hands dirty in the war we’re in.

I disagree. PDJT should get as much wall/fence money that he can, sign the bill into law and then immediately invoke section 284 to move funds around to fund additional wall/fencing. Unless the Dems want to fie a new bill that removes the newly appropriated funds there will be nothing they can do about it. Even if they file a lawsuit over the 284 issue, the construction will go forward with the new appropriated funds. Win-win.

Just curious if anyone can explain why this post was pulled earlier. I found this thread while browsing or a duplicate or similar content. The NYT article addresses many of the same details, but exposes the left’s manner of propaganda.

The pulled thread:

Trump Gives Ground on his Wall as Border Deal Comes into View

To-wit:
This thread has been pulled.
Okay

I think it should be open for discussion, but the thread was not pulled as a duplicate: The NYT headline does not exist on FR.

I don’t care for censorship; I would rather have it tagged as fake news, if that’s what it is, rather than impeding comment on this “war of media” which is governing the current political landscape.

Otherwise FR has become DU redux.
