Color me uneducated. I thought the Iron Dome system was an American system to begin with.

Iron Dome missiles cost $45,000 each. They have been used to shoot down $1500 missiles and $600 drones. The cost differential means any adversary could easily deplete your supply.

I’m not saying it isn’t wonderful to be able to shoot down just about anything, just that you need to be selective about what you shoot.

Israeli’s place the cost of their citizens lives way higher than a thousand of those missiles I’d say.

And when you’re surrounded by enemies who want you gone, it doesn’t matter what the price tag is for securing your society.

Was wondering this as well. Didn’t we knock down SCUDs in the Gulf War?

Yes, that was the introduction of the Patriot systems to the world.

Its actually more expensive to shoot missiles because they’re expensive to acquire and once fired your armory is depleted.

Anti-missile systems are becoming more accurate and effective and the cost advantage is increasingly on the defenders’ side.

The US Army made a good call buying the Iron Dome system.

Iron Dome tracks the incoming ordinance and ignores the one that will not hit friendly targets. It only shots down what will hit .

” Didn’t we knock down SCUDs in the Gulf War?”

Yes and no. Scuds tend to break up on the way down. The intercept missiles sometimes struck fuel tanks and other debris. The guidance on the incoming missiles was so bad they rarely would have hit anything of value in any case.

While intercept technology is getting better all the time, you always have a probability that you will miss. So, if you absolutely must hit the target you have to launch enough interceptors to guarantee a takedown. More modern payloads can maneuver on the way to the target making the task nearly impossible. Also, hypersonic maneuvering missiles make shoot-downs more improbable.

Unfortunately, we won’t have four years to gear up for the next war so we have to be ready for it all the time. A very expensive proposition. On top of that we may have another Barak Obama who lost America’s deterrent posture, making war more probable.

Much of our missile defense research was done through Israel, before Bush 43 ended our participation in the ABM Treaty (which allowed us to do R&D more openly). There is probably some shared technology, but Iron Dome is primarily an Israeli system.

"Was wondering this as well. Didn’t we knock down SCUDs in the Gulf War?"

The problem was that, while the Patriot system worked, at first, no one had ever left it on 24/7. It wasn't until they started missing, every launch, that it was discovered that there was a tracking error in the software/radar interface clock, and this resulted in up to a 90 degree launch fault.

A SCUD hit a US barracks at Dharhan, killing 27 troops, and others were hitting Israel, that was supposed to be protected by Patriot batteries.

This prompted Israel to develop their own system...

It's presumed that this error has been fixed.

There are only around 15 million Jews in the entire world.

Israel, with a Jewish population of around 6.5 million Jews and 2 million non-Jews designs develops and manufactures high-tech military systems that even the USA buys and uses.

Muslims, with a world population of 1.8 billion make things like the bomb belt and crude rockets the work like huge bottle rockets.

Where are the muslim designed and manufactured products that compare with those of Israel?

Don’t waste your time looking for them because they aren’t there.

We need to WIPE OUT our enemies when they raise their heads. If terrorists want to lob stuff in obliterate everything in a one mile circle good or bad. Word will get out and thelocals will do our protecting for us.

“For cheap missiles and drones cant they be jammed?”

Yes and no. For example, ISIS killed some unknown number of troops using modified drones purchased off Amazon. So, you have to have pretty specific technology and you have to have it at the right place at the right time. Current military solutions are very expensive and not as common as drones. Notice that a European airport was recently shut down for quite some time, costing a lot of money, by an angry couple using a drone...not even terrorists. A recent government study lasting a few weeks tracked hundreds of drone flights within the enhanced warning zone of a busy American flight hub. Seven of those flights were within a mile and over 1,000 feet. While jamming technology is improving, the Russian base in Syria was attacked and numerous planes were damaged or destroyed. (Probably a couple hundred million dollars worth.) The Russians employed their newest and best tech and reported no damage. But photos taken from a distance told a different story. Nobody knows who launched the attack and the jamming, apparently, had no effect. That implies autonomous flight. (Oh, boy.)

Ah, okay.

So we pay for it.

We pay for it again.

Sounds really American.

Depends on your adversary. For 3rd world applications, those $1500 missiles/$600 drones likely cost 10x as much to acquire.
