Pelosi Outsmarted Herself on the SOTU
American Spectator ^ | February 7, 2019 | David Catron

Posted on 02/07/2019 6:01:14 AM PST by Zakeet

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi withdrew her original State of the Union invitation, preventing President Trump from delivering the address as scheduled on January 29, she was probably surprised when he responded with such calm forbearance: "This is her prerogative. I will do the address when the shutdown is over." By the time Trump finished the rescheduled speech Tuesday evening, she no doubt understood that her petty political ploy had been a blunder. Trump, being no mean showman, had long since realized that the highly publicized delay would increase public interest in the speech - and that is precisely what happened.

By the time he entered the House chamber, it was already obvious that the national audience would very likely exceed last year's larger-than-usual viewership for such speeches. This is not typical for the SOTU address. The normal pattern is a reasonably large audience for a president's first address, followed by a gradual decline in public interest each year thereafter. ... According to a report in the Hill, broadcast TV numbers from Nielsen show the audience share was 10 percent over last year’s speech.

[Snip]

Moreover, CBS and CNN conducted polls of public reaction to Trump’s words and the vast majority of viewers liked what they heard. The CBS/YouGov poll found that 76 percent of the public approved of the address, including 97 percent of Republicans and a whopping 82 percent of Independents. And a majority of viewers agreed that the President accomplished one of his primary goals for the address - improving national unity.

[Snip]

And, in more than one case, their answers debunked Democrat talking points. A particularly glaring example of this was the public's response to his points on illegal immigration.

I agree that the party is too far gone but I don’t believe everyone who calls themselves Democrats are in this position

“He should include a box of crayons.”

Excellent!

Re your post #23:

Years ago I considered myself a leftist— whenever their flag was raised I stood and saluted (figuratively, I mean.)
More than a few times I knew, instinctively and profoundly, that I was applauding nonsense. I expended hours of effort ignoring, rationalizing and self-deceiving to maintain my identification with them.

Why? Because, for one thing I’d forfeit my narcissistic sense of being at the vanguard of history. I wanted to be special, merely being unique didn’t seem like enough I guess.

More important however, I feared it would be the equivalent of losing my self—that I would be alone, cast adrift in a forlorn, arbitrary and meaningless chaos.

I’m overdoing it a little; I actually recall the day I consciously rejected the left. The world didn’t shift its axis; no mountains fell. It was no different from any other and I remained the same person who’d gone to bed the night before. Well, maybe I was a little pissed off at my former heroes.

I think some of these kids are going to be in similar states as they begin to wake up; the fear of change is harder than the change itself. It may be that fear we are seeing these days.

I just bring this up because the only way to defeat the left is by converting the leftist individually. This takes empathy—and truckloads of patience.

You are correct.

The VP was also given the same documents, both were in a heavy brown folder. Pence followed along as well, but w/o the shuffling around of papers.

She was purposefully doing that as a distraction (IMHO).

non-hooded klanswomen

The best line/meme after the speech was:

There has not been that many Democrats together, all dressed in white, since they founded the Klan.

MY PREDICTION: HE’S GOING TO WIN THEM ALL OVER EVENTUALLY, ESP THE AOCs OUT THERE.

I think so too and I bet if the 2020 election were held today; President Trump would win by a significant margin even with the democrats cheating like they always do.

I agree with all your points, except I don’t think he’ll win many of them over. I worked around many liberals over the years and there’s no winning over people who are incapable of accepting logic, reason and the lessons of history. Make no mistake, they want to control us, restrict our freedoms, and make government the end all in our lives. Their relentless drive toward socialism is just a first step toward even greater evils. I’m afraid our differences with them are simply irreconcilable.

Even though not talking to me; I agree with your points. They won't change directions and our differences are irreconcilable. I bet sometime in the not too distant future, depending on who the President is, we may end splitting the nation. The dems will have to move to dem states and republicans will have to move to conservative states. The alternative would be straight up war in the streets with riots with lots of burning, collateral damage and killing. The far left already has a mob mentality so it isn't much of a hike to get to rioting.

I propose they get Washington state, Maine, and Minnesota. We get the rest. Build walls around those states with big beautiful gates for trade. ;)

Outstanding comment! Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

A big moment for me politically was Reagan’s funeral. I was already somewhat conservative but I was dumbstruck by the way the media was so surprised at the outpouring of affection and respect for the man. It was a display of liberal arrogance and profound bias that caused me to fully realize the depths to which the media was politicized. It was one of those moments that changes the way you look at things.

The Left has been pretty successful at brainwashing several generations of Americans. The indoctrination has been relentless. Its going to take some profound events to alter their thinking. The two things that most often tend to change people are fear and pain, as in a perceived threat by a foreign power or the financial pain associated with economic downturns. Those kind of things get people’s attention and kick start the process of re-evaluating your personal circumstances and questionning what you’ve been told.

The mendacious media is a serious impediment to persuading people with facts, logic and the lessons of history. There is a daily barrage of propaganda that has unfortunately taken effect in this country. Even Trump’s economic successes, which benefit everyone, are not universally acknowledged or appreciated. That illustrates the challenge of trying to get our message out over the incessant smoke screen of a media that works tirelessly to shape the “news”.

There already is a secession of sorts going on, but more in a virtual sense. People are leaving troubled blue states for saner lives in red states.

I also think its possible that in the future some states and/or regions will more or less go their own way, in contravention to federal dominance. There is already precedent for this, ironically established by liberal states through the “declaration” of their illegal sanctuary policies. This can work both ways and I believe it will.

That is absolutely true. Just like the cabal that tried to subvert Trump’s election and presidency. They hate us for our principles and for electing him. They especially hate outsiders.

Trump was a master at starting the speech by praising the WWII vets at the beginning of the speech. He then closed with the very personal story of the Dachau survivor and the vet who was involved in the liberation of the camp who was seated next to him. It was a masterful stroke.

But beyond that, his summation in the last 10-15 minutes of the speech showed the American people who the real bad guys were...Congress. He let it rip on both sides, not singling out Democrats, but giving hell to Republicans too. His closing remarks on the greatness of this country and the gridlock that is all too common in Washington, struck a chord that transcends party affiliation. He made EVERY member of Congress look small in their petty bickering and their concern about Party over Country.

There were times in the speech I wondered where he was going, but at the end, it was a truly historic speech.

He had the perfect tone too. Not loud. Not bombastic. Soft spoken, factual. People tuning in who had never seen him before were probably like “Wait...is this the out of control guy we keep hearing about?”

And I have also read somewhere, Jack Wheeler, I believe, that she had a very different transcript of what PDJT was going to say. This was so the Dems had no clue what was coming. Brilliant!!

Good observations. I also worked with and socialized with liberals for several years back in the ‘90s and early ‘00s.

Something to add to your observations is that they are terrified of offending anyone. The group think promotes acceptance of deviance with no moral debate allowed.

Challenging their views, in their minds, is a “sin” and blasphemy. It doesn’t take much to get expelled from the circle for “heretical” thinking.

“Democrats are stupid. Trump has had DECADES of experience in the very brutal public eye of NYC, plus The Apprentice.”

Public relations in NYC is a blood sport. “They wanna watch you BLEED”.
Surviving decades as part of the society rumor mill is so far above the pampered environment of D.C. where politicians are wined, dined and covered for.
Its like watching Conan the barbarian laying waste to a group of prepubescent snowflakes.
I almost feel sorry for them.
Almost.
