Jefferson freed Sally’s children in his will but not Sally. One of them, Madison Hemmings, was living in Ohio at the time of the 1870 census. The census taker wrote a note in the margin: “This man is the son of Thomas Jefferson.” Some of her descendants were able to pass for white.

People need to cut Jefferson a little slack here. He was still young and virile when his wife died at such a young age. It would have been quite natural for Sally, 3/4th white and stunningly beautiful by most historical accounts, to step in to fill a gaping need in Jefferson's life.
Sally could have left him during the years they were in Paris together when he was living as ambassador to France since slavery had been abolished by the revolution. The fact that she did not indicated she cherished the relationship.
Prudes today can hop on their soapbox and claim he should have formally married her. At the time, such a marriage would have, in fact, been illegal.
Supposedly Jefferson promised his wife just before her death that he would not remarry. He easily could have found a white woman of his social class to agree to marry him.
The DNA results make it likely that Jefferson fathered some of Sally's children but it is not 100% certain (several close male relatives with the Jefferson Y-chromosome are possibilities). One of her children may have been fathered by one of Jefferson's nephews (two sons of his sister, surname Carr, were long suspected, and often mentioned pre-1998 by those defending Jefferson's reputation).
Sally was the half-sister of Jefferson's wife.
Sally was around 50 when Jefferson died. He may have believed she was better off not being legally free and that there was no danger that she would be given onerous work to do.
Sally’s mother was half white and her father was white. It is of interest that Jefferson had her sons learn how to play the violin and they later earned their livings by doing so.
TJ promised his dying wife that he would not remarry, apparently the Evil Step Mother stereotype had some influence. I have no doubt that his relationship with Sally was one of love on both parties.

It is mind-bogglingly stupid for conservatives to join in with this fake outrage over college pranks. Why are we suddenly endorsing the practice of digging up innocent college pranks and falsely calling politicians racist, when such practices are used as political weapons of destruction almost exclusively against us?
The smart play in this instance would be for us to stand by the truth; namely, that wearing a funny costume in college does not make someone a racist. And that allegations of improper sexual aggression need to be proven.
This is a chance for us to stand for principles and for justice. If we take it as an opportunity to destroy a Democrat politician and participate in character assassination - then, next SCOTUS appointment, when the Left yet again commits character assassination against an innocent conservative - we won’t have a leg to stand on, because, see? We did it too.

Compared to our multitude of human glitches they are likely to prove safer.
They won’t get sleepy, they won’t feel ill, they won’t get drunk, their eyesight won’t diminish, they won’t text while driving, get distracted by their friends, speed for the hell of it.
The computing power to make it work is already cheap and available. Pack enough of a variety of sensors, radar, cameras into the vehicle and it should exceed our capabilities. Building software that can always recognize people and animals is probably where development is at right now.

I never said we should suck up or kowtow to anyone - it’s not about turning the other cheek. What I said is that we shouldn’t engage in the Left’s loathsome practice of PC character assassination and politics of personal destruction. It’s making them look foolish and if we participate it will make us look foolish too.
Fight them - but not over false charges of racism and unsubstantiated “me too” allegations - fight them over real things like their anti-Liberty socialist agenda, their wonton racial divisiveness, their corrupt lust for power, their wrong-headed open border obsession, and their evil attack on the unborn.
There is plenty on the Left to go after that is a true threat - why squander all credibility by participating in these silly fake charges of college racism?
The Left’s attack on Kavanaugh left them looking like first class a-holes. It’s not helping them one bit - America is watching while they lie through their teeth and stomp their feet in fake outrage - they are shooting themselves in the foot.
Why would you want the right to imitate the Left’s behavior, when it’s only hurting them?
Our glitches are avoidable. Don’t drink while driving. Don’t text. Pull over and rest or have a partner and drive in shifts. Our glitches are also understandable. A computer glitch can come out of nowhere, when you least expect it, at the worst possible moment. It can go HAL 9000 on you and wreak death and destruction.
