Lawmakers reluctant to consider impeaching Gov. Ralph Northam, Virginia House speaker says

RICHMOND

The speaker of Virginia’s House of Delegates renewed his call for Gov. Ralph Northam’s resignation Monday, but stopped short of saying the House would start any efforts to force the governor out.

“I think there’s a rightful hesitation about a removal from office,” Speaker Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, said. “Impeachment — that’s a very high standard.”

He said he hasn’t spoken to Northam since the Democratic governor admitted he posed in either blackface or in Ku Klux Klan robes when he was a student at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1984 — an admission Northam recanted less than 24 hours later.

Minutes before his Republican caucus met to begin the work day, Cox said the political chaos surrounding the racist photo that appeared on the governor’s medical school yearbook page was “painful” and “heartbreaking.”

Today is a tough day,” he told reporters Monday morning as legislators gathered back in Richmond for the first time since the photo scandal began Friday afternoon.

Lawmakers Monday morning seemed to be in agreement that a lot of legislative work needed to get done today. The House has 150 pages’ worth of bills to get through, and Cox said he expected the work day to go until at least 7 p.m.

“It’s our obligation to get things done,” he said. “We just have to do our job, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Adding to the possible distractions legislators face today, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax released a statement Monday morning denying allegations of sexual assault that Big League Politics — the same conservative news outlet that first posted the racist photo — wrote about Sunday night.

I agree, Northam did nothing “illegal”, so I can’t see where impeachment would be an option. Knowing that impeachment is on shaky legal ground, the Dems will continue to howl for him to resign. If Northam is a real cool cucumber, could he, would he stay and fight ?

The Dems are certainly more frantic to have Northam resign than the Republicans are. He’s an albatross around the Dems neck on both the infanticide issue and the racial issue.

The Dems in Virginia have not treated Lt. Gov. Fairfax very well - he just doesn’t seem to have the right connections or something. From a Clarice Feldman article: Three weeks before the election, he [Northam, but you know the Dems were involved] removed from flyers the name and photograph of Justin Fairfax, the black man running on his own ticket for lieutenant governor. In 2016, Fairfax was denied a speaking slot at the Democratic Party of Virginia’s state convention and dinner.” Now the story of sexual assault is out there ... just because the Compost spiked it doesn’t mean there isn’t some “there” there. So ... Fairfax is being dirtied up already.

I think the Dems “long game” is to get Northam to resign, sacrifice Fairfax on the altar of #metoo (he’d have to resign) - who is next? The odious, horrific Atty General Mark Herring ... gun grabber extraordinaire, someone who doesn’t care about the law if it suits his personal political objectives and a radical Progressive on steroids, compared to Northam or even Fairfax. Now that would be a “coup” for the Progressive Left.

We all have skeletons in our closets based on this approach. I'm sure at some point in my life some ghost will surface where I violated a contemporary social more that was perfectly acceptable 60 or so, years ago.

This is a trend where the "offended parties" can go anywhere in anyone's life and find a reason to ruin them.

Even a blind man can see the danger in this because only liberals define these rules while republicans follow the rules.

Grounds? They don’t need no stinkin’ grounds. These are Democrats.

he did not violate law while in office.

If he took the picture last week would he have broken any law? Poor taste/poor judgment, yes but a violation of a law?

Impeachment? For what? Is it a crime for him to have appeared in a racist costume 30 years ago? Now, if he just wants to resign out of shame, he’s welcome to do that, but I do not understand what possible grounds they could have for impeachment. (Other than the obvious of being a supporter of infanticide)

It is so much fun to watch Democrats and socialists “Hoist on their own Petard!”

For those not acquainted with the term, in the olden days a petard was a bomb to blow open the gates of a city. Often the man in charge of the bomb went up with it.

Has anyone asked governor "Coonman" how many of these infanticides he has been involved with?

Democrats - aborting their voting base since 1973, replacing with illegals since 1986.

Your post #13,

You can't impeach a guy for putting black paint on his face and taking a picture of it 30 years ago.

Agree. Now if the governor holds fast and steady at the wheel, it should fade to nothing. This within a week. Consider the publicity given to the "native Indian." He had his 15 minutes of fame. On and on showing the drumming in the face of the young MAGA hat youth. Now Nathan Phillips seems to have dropped off the map. It is dead stuff. They used him and now on to other nastiness.

Impeach him for what? This country is moving from “You owe me an apology!” to “Kill them all and let God decide.”

“What would the grounds for impeachment be?”

Per the left, a snarky Tweet.

How the heck can having a racist yearbook photo from 1984 be impeachable?

The world is crazy.

No impeachment. Because if they do, the Dems will say turn about is fair play, the bar will be lowered and the media will be right there to whip up impeachment hysteria against Trump.

The Dems would easily sacrifice a knight for a king.

If the Democrats really wanted him gone, Avenetti would be on the stage in front of a camera by now.
