The president of the board of trustees of California’s Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) has been forced to reverse his decision to drop the Pledge of Allegiance from board meetings following public backlash over the move.
In late January Robert Miller, president of the SBCC board of trustees, wrote in an e-mail to Celeste Barber, one of the college’s adjunct professors, that he had decided to scrap the Pledge at board meetings “for reasons related to its history and symbolism.” Miller went on to claim he had “discovered that the Pledge of Allegiance has a history steeped in expressions of nativism and white nationalism.”
Miller added that he also objected to the phrase “one nation under God” in the Pledge. “The First Amendment not only protects freedom of speech and religion [but] it also expressly prohibits laws that establish a religion,” Miller informed Barber. “The U.S. Supreme Court has expressly extended those rights to those who express no belief in God. Thus, I disagree with the 1955 act of Congress to add this phrase to the Pledge of Allegiance.”
In response to Miller’s e-mail, Barber appeared at a January 24 SBCC board of trustees meeting to express her opposition to Miller’s decision. During her comments, which were repeatedly disrupted by student protestors in attendance, Barber recalled that Miller had unsuccessfully attempted to drop the Pledge a year earlier, and that she continued to oppose his subsequent efforts to do so.

Africans never developed a navy or an ocean going ship all these hundreds of years. Inventions in medicine and architecture and science escaped them although we did the work for them. Why do many Africans still live in shacks with dirt floors in 2019? Women die in childbirth. They can’t raise their own food so die of starvation. Pathetic.

It was added in 1955——we did quite well before it.
I lived my first 23 years without it and The Greatest Generation lived even longer———and we were a patriotic,God loving country-——then came the 60s.
