Washington (AFP) - A US court has found the Syrian government culpable in the 2012 death of journalist Marie Colvin, ordering a $302.5 million judgment for what it called an "unconscionable" attack that targeted journalists.
Colvin -- a renowned war correspondent whose harrowing career was celebrated in the recent Golden Globe-nominated film "A Private War" -- was killed in the Syrian army's deliberate shelling of the Baba Amr Media Center in Homs on February 22, 2012.
According to the judgment delivered late Wednesday, Syrian military and intelligence tracked the broadcasts of Colvin and other journalists covering the siege of Homs to the media center.
They then targeted it in an artillery barrage that killed Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik.
The federal court in the US capital cited the testimony of a former Syrian intelligence officer who was given the name "Ulysses," who said that after the attack, Syrian officers celebrated the news that Colvin had been killed.

That is pretty pricy. Most journalists aren’t worth two bits.
What standing does whatever that court is have? I thought Trump made the declaration that the country will no longer recognize the legitimacy of the international court? How will the aggrieved parties collect the compensation?
I don’t see it. Courts in war zones...
Seems to me a target is a target. Hiding in a hospital is as despicable as bombing one.
Try collecting.
Try and collect.
Syria didn’t kill her. She entered Syria illegally and was working with the terrorists who killed her.
The newspaper that sent her to Syria should pay.
Seems more than a tad high. I would have agreed to go for for $300 bucks
Might be Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976 (FSIA). I haven’t seen the ruling but they seems like hint extrajudicial killing as a ground to hold foreign sovereign liable.
It is a rather shaky concept though. With all the lies of chemical weapons used to justify foreign strikes you can’t blame the Syrian military for viewing journalists as high value enemy combatants.
I don’t understand -
US Court judgement - crime in Syria - victims are not US citizens - wartime.
How does the US have any jurisdiction??
I am not the sharpest pencil in the box, so explain clearly.
See post #10. Although the legitimacy of FSIA is questionable in terms of international law.
Right. The check is in the mail. Promise.
Good luck collecting.
