He got in trouble for telling the truth regarding Charleston, these statements are actually smart politically and if/when the hoax is revealed he can make a real statement.

I think he made the statement for the purpose when it proves to be a falsehood he looks good for standing up for the guy at the time.
Sharpton has called on Trump to condemn this so this takes the wind out of his sails.

Well, IF this attack did happen, it was horrible. It’s not as if there are suspects in custody, so no individuals are being smeared. Now...let the Chicago police come up with some actual suspects.
(It would have been a BIG mistake for Trump even to have implied he suspects this is a hoax. Let this play out naturally.)
It does smell, but it does little harm to condemn violence, especially violence done in the name of MAGA.
It it's proven to be a hoax, then Trump can condemn the hoax too.
If it's not proven a hoax, then an early condemnation of alleged violence is better than silence which could be construed as condonment.
Nah - nothing wrong with calling it what it was, regardless of how/why it happened...it was lousy thing for anyone to do to anyone.

If it’s an activist queer, of course it is a hoax. 99.999% certain.
He was smart to say it was horrible. He can always change that if the truth turns out to be otherwise. If he withholds such a comment, then he feeds the narrative. If it turns out to be a hoax, he can make a scathing comment on twitter, drawing more attention to it than the media will.
