The Cops Were the Aggressors in This Week's Deadly Houston Drug Raid
Reason ^ | 1-29-19 | Jacob Sullum

On Monday evening in Houston, a dozen armed men broke into the home of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas, a middle-aged couple who had lived in the house at 7815 Harding Street for at least two decades. The first man through the door, who was armed with a shotgun, used it to kill one of the couple's dogs. Tuttle responded to the home invasion by grabbing a revolver and shooting the man with the shotgun, who collapsed on a sofa in the living room. As Nicholas tried to disarm the intruder, his accomplices shot her. Tuttle returned fire, and by the end of the shootout he and his wife were both dead. Four of the assailants were hit by gunfire, while a fifth injured his knee.

"The police didn't knock first? I assume that they did. I also assume they announced that they were police officers before kicking the door in."

Wrong on both counts. No knock. And they supposedly announced police as they were busting the door open and shooting the dog. As if anyone could sort those things out in that kind of mayhem. That's the PD version which has been released. Of course, the occupants will never get to tell their side. Why not just call them and tell them they were outside with a warrant and that they should come out?

Would you rather be living with drunk or someone high PCP or LSD. Only wouldn't choose the former. It's unbelievable that are unaware of how dangerous harder drugs.

And, what you're presenting is a straw man. Alcohol is legal and, thus, used in far greater quantity than recreational drugs of any kind. If recreational drugs were legal, they'd be killing more.

But, why the hell do we need anymore legal ways to get high? How many more citizens need to die so losers have a "right" to get high? It's insane. It diminishes the quality of life for everyone.

Acevedo said police "actually bought black-tar heroin at that location," although "we didn't find any" on Monday. Instead the search discovered an unspecified amount of marijuana, along with a white powder that police thought might be cocaine, or maybe fentanyl.

Looks pretty sketchy to me, on BOTH sides!

They admitted not knocking? Odd that they'd announce they were police without knocking first. But, they had a legal right to be there. And, the shooting only began when the officers were attacked by pit bull.

The couple in question was found to possess not only marijuana but either cocaine or another white powder drug. So, they were likely high out of their minds.

They served a "no knock warrant", which is SOP for Law Enforcement these days.

If someone had a problem with that, change the law.

I see no laws or procedure violated. The officers were attacked by a pit bull and the couple was found with cocaine or some other white powder drug. It is absurd to claim they are victims.

You missed this from the article:

Meanwhile, uniformed officers waiting in or near a "marked police unit" outside the house "hit the siren and hit the lights so they knew that police officers were there."

He they done their job they would have know there was a dog there and that also would have militated against sending in plain clothes officers with their guns blazing.

I read it was at the house, but did not say it was from the decedents.

I’ve lived with an alcoholic abusive father and I’ve had a roommate that was a decent average guy that never raised his voice to me or hit me once. But, he smoked weed a few times a week and enjoyed LSD or mushrooms a couple of times a month. His girlfriend was much the same way.

I know which one I preferred to come home to. You come back to quality of life, but frankly, I don’t see the difference and never have. I’ve been drunk and I’ve sampled (for a few years, multiple times every day) just about every other way to alter your mood. Perhaps if you actually had a conversation with people instead of repeating the ‘reefer madness’ bulls—t that our government (and the goobermint NEVER lies, does it?) has fed you your entire life, you may have a different understanding.

BTW, you can wipe the smirk off your face and knock off the ‘I knew it, just another loser druggie’ thought you just had. I have been off everything (including alcohol) since 1985 when I realized I was turning into daddy dearest...

They did their job. They turned sirens and flashers before they approached. They legally entered the house. And, shooting only started when the couple's friendly pit bull attacked one of the officers. The officer killed the pit bull in self-defense.

The officers did nothing legally wrong nor did they violate any procedures. If you have problem with that, demand the law be changed and see if there is enough support for it to be changed.

You mean liberals and libertarians agree that using drugs should not be a federal crime? Many conservatives and Freepers would also agree. Many big government liberty killing conservatives like criminalizing personal choices. They have more in common with liberals than libertarians.

Agree but always aim at head height or groin/thigh level in case your home invader is wearing body armor.

The cops had several options they could have chose which would have been legal and not violated “procedures” . They choose the dumbest one, the one most likely to result in violence and mayhem. But hey, two dead middle age people with no priors is just A-OK cuz they “followed procedures.”

Come on now, any other way would have robbed them of their chance to play Rambo.

“We have about 4x the number of cops than what would be tolerated by a free society.”

I stand by my assertion.

Looks like you missed the part where no drugs were found.

Doesn't matter. You see, a little "collateral damage" in the name of the drug war is a good thing, because it serves as a warning to the peasants to keep their heads down lest they get inadvertently caught in in the crossfire.

I notice that the usual jackboot supporters have made their appearance on the thread. It is good to see that they are once again outnumbered by those of us actually concerned about liberty and due process.

let me think,
Any neighbors I want to get rid of?
Just go to a pay phone and tell the local cops my target is selling heroin from their kitchen.
If you can find a pay phone.
