Dems signal flexibility at border meeting
The Hill ^ | 01/30/19 | Niv Elis and Mike Lillis

Democrats on Wednesday strongly suggested they are open to a compromise with President Trump even as they unveiled an initial proposal for securing the border that includes no physical barriers.

Democratic leaders emerged from a bipartisan budget meeting on border security taking a hard line on Trump’s proposed border wall, while hinting they were open to a deal.

“We will expand on the $1.6 billion for border security-related programs that House Democrats have already passed,” House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) said at a conference committee meeting.

She said smart border security would not be overly reliant on physical barriers but on better technology and more personnel, a phrasing that left open the possibility of barriers.

Lawmakers met Wednesday for the first time since the longest government shutdown in U.S. history to work out a deal on Homeland Security spending. Negotiators face a Feb. 15 deadline to get a new deal and prevent another shutdown.

In their opening bid, Democrats proposed strengthening border security by adding 1,000 new customs officers, funding new imaging technology to scan cars and trucks at ports of entry and boosting resources related to migrants being held in custody. Their proposal would also limit Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention beds and focus on alternatives to ICE detention programs.

Lowey said she was “cautiously optimistic” about reaching a compromise, while Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), the only member of the conference committee to represent a border district, also signaled a willingness to negotiate.

“Right now, I'm saying no wall,” he said, before adding that there were ways to reach a compromise on a border barrier that would allow both sides to claim a victory. He noted that the border currently features 654 miles of barriers, of which roughly 300 miles are not a wall, but a low-lying vehicle barrier.

“Hint, hint, 300 miles of vehicle barriers,” Cuellar said. “There's ways to get where we need to get.”

etc...

“proposal for securing the border that includes no physical barriers.”

In other words, their way, or the highway, except without the highway part.

Saying “no wall” is NOT flexibility.

Fighting the same battle over and over is a sign of denial, not flexibility. It may also be an indication of insanity, if a different outcome is expected.

And this repeated denial is a total waste of time. Burning daylight here, folks, get on your horses and RIDE.

Convene the entire US Congress in McAllen, Texas, within spitting distance of the border, in open air, where ALL the members of both the House and Senate can see for themselves the first-hand effects of a relatively undefended border. The purpose would be to deliver the State of the Union address.

The Demoncraps are trying to confuse the word “wall” with the word “barrier.” They are trying to deceive people into thinking Trump wants a wall when in fact it is a steel slat barrier. In fact, it is a fence, which is already being used, on a bigger scale.

I need a break from this story. I’m way overheating. We’ve been lied to by both parties since 1965 about putting an end to this invasion. They use slightly different language each time but the result is always exactly the same. Illegals continue to pour in while we’re told the border is secure. Stop! It!

Flexibility? Really?

So...why did their first proposal include a cut of 20% of current detention bed counts?

Why no barrier, when DJT has already said that’s a non-starter?

Nope, the only thing the dhimmicraps prove, so far, is they are more interested in destroying this nation than in protecting its borders and its people.

The dhimmicraps are today’s communists...

You could add 10,000 new officers and when an illegal sets foot in this country he asks for asylum anyway..

Limit the ice beds just means more people released immediately into our society. - Tom

They have to feign flexibility in an effort to recover control of the optics. They are cornered at the moment. Refusing to negotiate eliminates their opportunity to paint Trump as a fascist dictator, should he choose to build the wall without congress. The alternative is to permit Trump to build the wall, get nothing in return (through negotiations), appear to all as childish obstructionists, and possibly lose seats and the POTUS race in 2020 all at once.

Question: As I understand it the border wall was approved years ago but not funded. Why can”t Trump just say he has found the funds to cover the wall bill that was passed?

That should put them in a tizzy.

The Trump team ought to say “Well since you don’t want barriers our proposal is that we tear down ALL existing barriers and start negotiations from that point. “
