I often reference Thomas Szasz who wrote "The Myth of Mental Illness". I believe he accepted that some problems (Major Depression, Schizophrenia, etc) were chemical in nature and could be treated medically. But he felt that most "mental illness" was just thought patterns that some people had which other people found objectionable.

On the one hand (I suppose) if you think guns are OK, abortion is murder, and God is real, then you are delusional and dangerous (according to half the country).
On the other hand, if you think you are a victim (in everything), white men are out to get you, sex is changeable, and sex between men and women is an act of violence, then you have lost your mind (according to the other half of the country).

Eventually, the country needs to decide who has adopted a wrong thought pattern, and who is thinking is a way which will create a viable future.
