Trump donates $100K of salary to alcoholism research
Washington Examiner ^ | Diana Stancy Correll

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism received a $100,000 donation from President Trump.

The money, which came from Trump’s third quarter salary in 2018, will assist the NIAAA with its mission to conduct research on alcoholism and alcohol-related problems. The NIAAA falls under the National Institutes of Health.

The donation, reportedly announced by the White House, also carries personal significance for Trump, who does not drink. His older brother, Fred Trump, died of alcoholism in 1981.

"To this day, I've never had a drink," Trump said in 2017, discussing the impact his brother had on his life. "And I have no longing for it. I have no interest in it. To this day, I've never had a cigarette. ... He really helped me. I had somebody that guided me. And he had a very, very, very tough life because of alcohol. Believe me — very, very tough, tough life. He was a strong guy, but it was a tough, tough thing that he was going through. But I learned because of Fred. I learned."

One of the best things I ever did was quit alcohol.

The advantage I have over the President in regards to this matter is that I know what a drag alcohol can be...and how wonderful it is to have that monkey off my back.

I don't think I was an alcoholic because I never had cravings, but it was still a beatch getting that poison out of my system.

To any of you fighting that battle or considering it, hang tough. Life is better than you can imagine on the other side.

The first thing I do (involuntarily) upon waking each morning is thank God for my sobriety.

I can comment on this (the A.A. part),if the person who drinks or drugs is not ready to be sober and enjoy the clarity all the money in the world will not resolve it . I drank for years and thought nothing of it feeling that it was a societal norm! I would easily work and not see what others (who were sober) saw in my attitude and work performance. Anyway drinking and drugging intervention/prevention has become BIG business in all aspects of our society . The cheapest way to address this is not privitized “rehab” centers but simply “jail like” places separate from criminal jails ...Return to State Hospitals we used to have for the mentally ill rather than stuffing them in jails which are not set up for treating that aspect of humanity. But in saying that I love this man our President Donald John Trump for his love of our Republic and his fellow citizens . Also for taking his time to serve us rather than sitting back watching America circle the drain to globalism. What a God send.

State hospitals were places of horrors. What a great place for monsters to have easy access to those we have thrown away.
Big biz rehab programs are kept honest because they have a bottom line. Unless they are corporate cronies.
I find it difficult to advocate fore move government institionalization.. it is most certainky never xheap.
Psychologically where is the line between mental illness and criminal behaviour.
The libs can find mental incapacity in all kinds of criminal activities. Are serial killers staying in a state hospital?

I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I did my detox at home by cutting back slowly over several months and then going cold turkey.

It was fits and starts at first and plenty of sleepless nights.

When I finally stopped entirely, the sleepless nights continued and the digestive problems picked up (praying helped a great deal during this period). But slowly the problems started to decline and the glimmers of hope started to grow.

I never had any cravings which made quitting considerably easier, but, if I had to, I was fully prepared to do whatever it took to quit.

As said, one of the best things I ever did.

Lots of those who can be out okay if properly medicated are out and not taking their meds. It does cost innocent lives.

We swung the pendulum too far 40 years ago and need to swing it back. I think there are those who can be out if monitored and taking their meds under supervision—but who need to be separated from society if/when they so refuse.

Unfortunately, since Jared K. got Obama’s prison reform bill through Congress, there will also be more dangerous people out on the street earlier.

This is great news — I’d much rather the NIAAA fund its money from donations like this one than from those from big alcohol.

I bet that I’ve donated more than that to my own alcohol research in years gone past.

We pay the private rehabs with tax money already....and the recidivism rate is high...drunks and druggies in criminal jail do no better than the mentally Ill who used to be in State Hospitals...so we pay and pay and pay...but criminal jails are not for drunks and druggies or the mentally Ill....the monster is private jails..if you ever looked into this type of thing.

Never trust a teetotaler, I’ve heard since my youth. I’ll make an exception in President Trump’s case.

Never trust a teetotaler

Rightly or wrongly, I have always believed that.

But an ex-drinker is a different animal from a "teetotaler."

What's your opinion of those who have escape the grip of alcohol because they thought it had too much negative influence on their lives?

I can't speak for others, but I am a much different person than I used to be. A better, improved person. Probably much more trustworthy (and I have always been considered a trustworthy person).

Just because you heard something since your youth doesn't make it true. I'll leave it at that.

I have a little extra respect for those who have exorcised demons from their lives. Even if the demons were self-inflicted.
