PING!
Full title:
Pay as you go? Illinois Tollway looks at embedding charging equipment in parts of I-294
To be payed for with gasoline taxes.
Go ask them what their ‘fee’ or surcharge will be as part of the deal. It’ll be high enough that most people will just skip this option.
Ill tollway looks at fleecing citizens (sheep)
free gas for rich liberals
What could go wrong? LOL.
Stuff like this sounds like this can be a nice boon doggle should warrant a thorough look. The amount$ allocated and projected number of electric vehicles using road vs actual. Who are the contractors (donators) and who are the sponsors (recipients).
Just another way for the politicians to up the vig.
Nice system they have. The pols skim off the top AND get the vig from the contractors and unions.
They should change the name to the state of Corruption.
We called it sIllinois for a reason.
ILLinois works too.
Here is their proposal.
I don’t think we are getting the full scoop on this. I suspect this is some sort research project. I certainly wouldn’t buy an electric car with less battery just because a stretch of 294 has inductive charging.
Even a small loss (compared to wired charging) amounts to a large cost when the scale of charging shifts from a small personal device to thousands of electric cars. For every MWh of electrical energy created, approximately two MWh of fuel energy must be used.
Key phrase/sentence in the article , “it’s not clear as to how much the technology would COST as part of the Tollway rebuild , and how MUCH customers would be charged for its use” They are talking about embedding an electrical current of some sort to charge teslas or whatever other s__tbox battery piece of crap some maroon has bought at the exspense of others....
This should do very well under a brine of chlorides in the winter. Electricity + salt brines, oh yeah. Isn’t Ill-anoy almost broke? This is one of the reasons why. Stupid people chasing after social justice instead of fiscal sanity. Oh, wait, that’s the same thing happening all around us. The U.S. has become a very un-serious place, except for the seriousness of the real problems.
I think MA does this on the Mass Pike. If you don't have EZ Pass it uses the license plate number to charge tolls. What could and does go wrong and we see it with EZ Pass is there's less resistance to tolls spinning out of control.
What happens with electric vehicles if power goes out in a blizzard on the NY Thruway (or whatever)?
Illinois is BROKE and has a backlog of 2 YEARS in paying its outstanding bills. WTF is it doing here?!
This article is from Sep 17. It explains the technology at the car level. It doesn’t go into much detail about what is required for the roadbed.
Fishing for government grants?
They say their target is 90+ percent "grid-to-battery". My only experience with inductive charging is with my phone. It is very slow, and very fussy as to relative positioning.
I would be more concerned with the amount of charge that can be transferred to the vehicle for each encounter with a charging coil, which will only last a fraction of a second at highway speed.
EV drivers would be incentivized to slow down in charging zones to increase the charging rate, and there's the possibility that this will disrupt the traffic flow. At peak hours, even minor disruptions can cause backups and traffic jams.
