The Treasury Department plans to claim Venezuela's U.S.-based international reserves and state-owned assets - including oil refiner and distributor Citgo - on behalf of the newly recognized government headed by opposition leader Juan Guaidó, removing them from the control of President Nicolás Maduro.

In a vaguely worded statement issued late Friday, Treasury said that "the United States will use its economic and diplomatic tools to ensure that commercial transactions by the Venezuelan government, including those involving its state-owned enterprises and international reserves, are consistent" with its recognition of the Guaidó government.

Why is Venezuela important?

That's one coup I'd be in favor of.

Doing it with their own money - elegant solution.

Without oil money, the Army might not get paid - unless they support the new guy.

I hope there’s someone who’s already thought all of that through.

Maybe he is trying to loot and run.

When Chavez took back 11 billion in gold bars and Maduro sold them off I am sure some of that money ended up in Maduro's pockets.

the Maduro regime began selling them off to raise the cash it desperately needed to fund imports and to try, unsuccessfully, to avoid defaulting on its foreign debt.

“When Chavez took back 11 billion in gold bars and Maduro sold them off”

That is probably the Turkey connection - gold and oil smuggling are the biggest rackets of the Erdogan Crime Family.

Nice chart on oil reserves. Venezuela has more proven oil reserves than any nation. Marxism has made Venezuela totally incapable of exploiting their great natural gift. Their oil industry both exploration and production and refining is in total shambles. Their refining capabilities are in such sad shape as to make them import gasoline.

I worked in Venezuela in the 70s pre Chavez in oilfield exploration. We had a clean efficient industry then.

Maduro will be gone within a year. It will take many years to restore their oilfields to efficiency. The engineers and technicians have left Venezuela. Many work in the USA and other nations in South America. It will take many years to repair the damage of Marxism.

After they cannibalized the two hundred “mobile” oil rigs to keep the ever failing and depleted equipment running without spare parts, the oil production literally died due to lack of equipment. While serving in the AmEmb Georgetown, our Military folks and Econ folks produced or received various cables detailing the production numbers, the rig numbers and the movement of such equipment in reports to Washington. It was evident in 2009-10 that that nation’s oil production was dying. Of course, the damn Ruski’s and their third-turd proxy Iranians did mischief that didn’t help the people. Socialism and Communism is a power grab scam.

*** Explains why the Russians are there. ***

The Russians are there as they have an agreement with the VZ government re: oil and mining. 5 billion dollar lifeline for oil, and 1 billion for mining, primarily of gold.

This agreement was in place before the US’ latest move.

I was referring to the oil reserve as being why Russia is there. So we basically agree. Without the oil, Russia would not be there.
