I think the point people are missing here is that Trump has very little leverage. All the independent courses of action I’m aware of will be stopped by the courts.

Republicans had a supermajority for two years and still no wall. Good luck getting it done now.

They did not have a Supermajority.

You’re right. Today is the day Trump became a one-term President.

Nah.

This is just how the sausage is made.

I'll be more concerned if he doesn't drop a load of bricks on them in the middle of February if they continue their intransigence.

I've seen a few political sausages made - check my FR born-on date. ;-)

JME_FAN,

What is your problem? Can't you handle a discussion? We're not Kool-Aid drinkers, all in lockstep. Stop insulting and bullying people. Grow up. Consider that Responsibility2nd and I have had our disagreements, other times we agree. FR is at its best when we can discuss topics. And, importantly, do so without devolving into insults, bullying, and so forth that you and a few others seem to prefer. Give it a break. If you have something substantive to say, do so, but give some respect to the rest of us, like Responsibility2nd.

If all else fails, when you prepare your next post, read just below that: "NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts."

I’m sensing tension. Perhaps some perspective is in order.

First of all, the way I see it at least, nothing has really changed. It’s not like past presidents who have caved in similar circumstances saying blah blah like “I’ve agreed to end the shutdown in exchange for increased funding for border security” or some other similar sounding vagueness. He laid out a specific plan of 3 weeks and at the end clearly threatened to declare an emergency if it’s not resolved. There won’t be any more shutdowns it’s either a legislative or executive solution at this point.

I’ll give him credit too I thought he was going to cave a week after the New Year. So hey, I don’t see how anything has really changed. I’ll wait until I hear words like above come from his mouth before I call him a caver.

So why the 3 weeks, someone may reasonably ask well I think it’s pretty obvious: to provide as much security possible for the SOTU and the Super Bowl. That’s really the reason for this minor reprieve IMO. But if one reading this isn’t convinced then at least consider the following:

You aren’t the President! It’s entirely possible over the last week, as those two events approach, he has received credible reports that detail real threats posed to either event or both. Some threats or intel we just don’t have access to because, well, we aren’t the President!

It’s entirely possible that’s the reason.

The bottom line is though even if the reader of this post rejects that theory, it still comes down to a question of whether or not you still trust his judgment. I’m not a fanboy of his or anyone, some around here may remember me as one of his greatest critics during the primaries (I supported Cruz). But he’s the president now, and has 3 weeks time left to work this out he, and the GOP.

And then the invectives of “caving” et al can start if nothing is done or worse we’re fed the line of BS that started this post, that we’ve all grown weary of hearing, “I’ve made a deal for border security that at this time, will not include a wall but that will be worked out on a later date.”

That’s when it’s time to give up. Not now though. To use a football analogy so close to the Super Bowl: it’s 4th and 9 with 7 seconds left in the 4th quarter and you’re down a touchdown. But you’re going to give up now?

Well if Trump doesn’t like what comes out of Conference he can still veto it.

Yes it is. Pelosi has already stated she will never allow a bill to the floor that funds the wall. And now Trump has shown he doesn’t have it in him to win a standoff with Pelosi. If the government shuts down again, they will know he will cave.

It’s over.

Sure. One, two, two and a half, two and three quarters, I really mean it this time two and 7/8... works well with your kids and works just as well with the Democrats. Hold that shifting line !

I don't think it's over.

I think people will see who is moving and who is blocking. If Trump gave up the wall without a fight, then I'd agree that he might be finished, but he didn't and he'll get credit for that.

I think Trump knows about brinksmanship, but he's used to dealing in a corporate world where people on the other side of the table understand about fiduciary responsibility and doing the right thing for their businesses.

I think Trump is truly surprised at how far Pelosi was willing to take brinksmanship, given that she's talking about the safety of our nation, and possibly the world. I think that he must now think that he's dealing with a madman, because no sane person would risk so much for so little (relatively speaking) as she is willing to do.

Given the thinking that Pelosi is insanely focused on her own power, Trump is going to use the next three weeks for the rest of Congress to retake control of the negotiations and move forward in a more structured, familiar way. If they don't, can't, or it becomes obvious that Pelosi will not get out of the way, then Trump will pull the trigger on the emergency order or the Democrats will try to remove Pelosi from the Speakership.

That's going to be the play for the next three weeks.

Democrats want to destroy this country, period and the Republican’s don’t seem to be doing a damn’ thing about it. They should’ve funded the wall within weeks of Trump taking office. That they didn’t tells me they don’t really want to do a damn’ thing about illegal immigration.

You are right about that. Trump has very few good people to work with in government. He’s almost alone there.

They don't or can't understand how Trump plays.....

This isn't about which side of the parties win..... it's Trump against an unwilling/ineffective Congress of 'both parties' to get our border secured. We all need to stand with Trump as this tide rolls in and out until there's a deal signed sealed and delivered.

They also have 3 weeks to figure out a veto proof majority vote and for Mudslime media to continually toot the last shutdown was a failure, etc etc.

No the fight was lost today. There is no going back.
