Don’t need Iran as a comparison. In early days of W White House a coup in VZ gained power for a few days. Its leaders sought US permission to dispose of Chavez, which team W denied. Chavez was rescued, coup collapsed, its leaders disposed of instead. Nearly two decades later DJT finds a different answer!

My recollections are that supporting the coup was blocked somewhere within the State department, not at VP or P level, although I was annoyed at the time W didn’t override the folks at State. I suspect a fair amount of current Foggy Bottom folks are appalled at being ‘Trumped’ here.
