Yep. The Covington boys were WAITING FOR A FREAKING BUS. They were minding their own business until a black supremacist group started shouting profanity and racial insults at them. Even then they didn't react. So Nathan Phillips pushes his way into the boys and starts beating his drum. One of the boys near him (Mr. Sandman) starts smiling as a way to brush this created drama off and, suddenly, he is guilty of smirking and leading the boys in insulting Mr. Phillips.

It turns out Mr. Phillips is not only NOT elderly (63), he is NOT a Vietnam veteran and, quite possibly, he is NOT more than a fraction Native American.* He is a full time activist who lives for these publicity stunts, being part of a crowd who was trying to break in and disrupt a Catholic mass later that same evening.

* FWIW, most Native Americans have a genetic marker that allows them to grow lush crops of hair on their head but little elsewhere on their bodies. If you look up close, Phillips is clearly balding the same places on the head as white men do.

AND a group of white guys with a drum approached them shouting racial epitaphs...

AND one black teen had stood his ground to defuse the situation while the 'white' man beat his drum inches from his face...

WOULD THE "BIG CONCERN' of the Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC be the facial expression on the teens face? The 'smirk'? I don't think so...
