DENVER (CBS4) Retired astronaut Mark Kelly and his wife, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords are helping launch a new gun control group in Colorado. This one is made up of gun owners.
The effort comes as gun sales are down, and the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to take up a gun rights case for the first time in nine years.
Colorado Gun Owners for Safety is made up of sport shooters, gun collectors and hunters like Mike Heyka.
Were not gun grabbers nor do we believe in arming everyone with guns is the answer. We are the moderate middle.
They say they were moved to action by shootings like that of Giffords, who told them, Now is the time to come together, be responsible.
Giffords husband, Mark Kelly, is also a gun owner.
Strong second amendment rights I believe go hand in hand with stronger gun laws, he said.
The new group will help push for gun control at the State Capitol.
I think what weve seen is the public has shifted a lot, said Rep. Alec Garnett, who plans to sponsor a bill to allow family or law enforcement to temporarily take someones guns if a judge deems them mentally unstable. Were in a place to move forward on something to save lives. Everyone should feel the pressure to make sure we get this done. I think we will this year.
The bill failed last year in a Republican-controlled Senate.
I dont believe that this makes Coloradans any safer, said Republican Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg. He says the bill is unconstitutional. So were doing away with that due process, and thats a concern for me.
Hes concerned too about the new gun control group being the voice for gun owners. None of them are Republicans.
Mark Kelly says the gun lobby isnt the voice for gun owners either. He says he welcomes any gun owner who supports their mission.
It would be great if this group was bigger, and we had Republican gun owners, and Im sure were looking for them.
Gov. Jared Polis, who is friends with former Congresswoman Giffords, met with her privately. No word on whether they discussed gun control.
Polis has indicated support for taking guns temporarily from people who are mentally unstable and with Democrats in control of both chambers, the bill will likely pass this year.
Recreational “medical” pot is legal in Colorado. Just “tax the hell out of it!” LOL.
That ain't a gun. That's a bong, man!
Leftism 101: Infiltrate and subvert.
Don’t be an idiot. Canada is about 2 or 3% black and 1.5% Mexican. We are about 12.5 and 17%.
So of the two most violent subcultures, you have at best, 4.5%.
We approach 30% of those two subcultures.
It has nothing to do with having some lumberjack register his gun.
75% of the murders in America are committed by blacks and hispanics according to the FBI. Add in dope (which is poured into this country BY Mexicans in a way you will never understand in Canada, and you will find that probably 90% of the murder in America is from our black and brown people, or has south of the Border roots.
So skip over the gun registration lecture, sport.
Hoser...
Your reading comprehension is evidently somewhat lacking.
My explanation of firearms registration in Canada was in demonstration of the fact that said registration DOES NOT WORK!!
80 years and ZERO crimes solved does NOT an effective law make, and anyone supporting that is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
I cannot comprehend the reasoning of anyone thinking *I* support such nonsense.
More LIES, OBFUSCATION and BULLSH!T !!!
SOSDD
Another case in point: Mexico has gun laws that are as strict as Canada's and nearly as strict as Japan's - it's virtually impossible for ordinary citizens to legally own handguns. In spite of these strict gun laws, Mexico's murder rate is closer to that in Somalia than that of Canada or Japan. It isn't the gun laws that determine a nation's crime rate, it's the quality of its people and culture.
Coincidence?
Not only that but fatherlessness is rampant in both the latino and black communities as well. It’s also a big thing in the United States since someone told me recently that it was almost a majority that aren’t married, in fact, plenty of my accounting clients are unwed couples as well. It puzzles me to no end why some people aren’t willing to take an extra step in commitment
