Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell informed his Democratic colleagues that he's holding a vote to "immediately open the government" on Thursday. The government has been shuttered for 32 days now as President Trump and Democrats continue to butt heads over border security. As Trump suggested, McConnell's legislation will include $5.7 billion for border security, including funds to build a wall.
Democratic leadership insists they're not paying for Trump's border barrier, but McConnell urged his colleagues to "put the country ahead of politics and take 'yes' for an answer."
Over the weekend Trump offered a compromise deal. If Democrats agreed to the wall, he'd offer temporary protections for "Dreamers," individuals participating in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Conservatives weren't thrilled about it, and the Democrats rejected it outright.
On Twitter Tuesday Trump commended congressional Republicans for their laser focus.
Never seen @senatemajldr and Republicans so united on an issue as they are on the Humanitarian Crisis & Security on our Southern Border. If we create a Wall or Barrier which prevents Criminals and Drugs from flowing into our Country, Crime will go down by record numbers!
McConnell's proposal on Thursday would reopen the nine shuttered federal departments and dozens of agencies through Oct. 1. It'll also include $12.7 billion in disaster aid.
Meanwhile, Democrats plan to vote on their own bill.
This week, @HouseDemocrats will vote on more bipartisan bills to re-open government, and act to bolster funding for border security solutions that work. @realDonaldTrump & @senatemajldr need to stop holding Americans hostage, stop blocking these bills, and #EndTheShutdown now.
That’s “Porko” Rico, muchacho!
Thanks...I pray that’s what is happening, Pelosi deserves to be put in that position.
All spending begins in the House.... Att:Paul Ryan
Exactly. $12b for disaster aid v some part of $5b for urgently needed national security doesn't pass the smell test.
Every single day illegal immigration continues leads to a greater national disaster, and it increases much faster than compounded interest.
Nonsense. No way a Democrat Bill gets 60 votes.
Democrats have learned if Trump refuses to budge, they cant force him to cooperate and the shutdown is hurting them more than him.
So theyre throwing in the towel.
Has McConnell said he would bring Schumers bill to the floor to vote?
Or are you just rushing out to declare defeat for something that won’t happen?
The way I read the news is that there are two bills: Trump’s and then a 3 week CR with no wall funding. If Trump’s fails, then they vote on Dems. I smell a rat.
The border situation is a disaster so why not spend it there?
If Trump’s fails to get 60, then yes, Shumer’s gets a vote.
This is a perfect Kobayashi Maru scenario.
Pelosi Twitter page blowing up hard against her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pew Poll today said 53% blame her.
Everybody here knows that you need 60 votes to overcome
a filibuster. But that is not the reason for the vote.
The reason is to put these RAT Senators and maybe a few RINOs
on record. I.E. A 2020 election issue.
Your fear about a CR has been noted and filed.
I believe it is for the Florida panhandle...Tyndall Air Force Base was completely wipe out...
Okay; it’s time to split the country up. Conservatives get everything between Canada and Mexico and the commies get L.A., The Bay Area, and NYC. We may consider moving out of DC so they can have that mess heap too. I think this is a very generous offer.
Alternatively we can deport all leftists to any country who will take their sorry miserable butts. Preferably communist countries since they seem to think it’s greener on that side.
Not a bad idea but I doubt any country is stupid enough to take them.
You’re completely wrong. They are just ammending the house bill in one and voting on the house bill in the other (a complete cave). What will happen...both bills will pass the Senate...since one is exactly what the house already passed that will go to the President to sign and the other will go back to the house to die. It’ll force Trump to sigh (a complete and total cave), or veto a “bi partisan bill”). Hopefully he vetos but then the Dems get to say Trump is keeping the government shutdown. What they would have done if they actually supported Trump would be to put the Trump ammendments to a vote and force the Democrats to fillibuster. They don’t support Trump. It’s 100% clear.Push Trump to veto the house bill no matter what! He should announce that he won’t sign it before the vote.
They will both be up and down votes..see my comments above. This is a total back stab but Mitch
Mitch just bailed her out though
