Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) called on his Democratic colleagues to give President Trump the funding for his long-desired border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, saying its construction is inevitable.
Give Trump the money, Peterson told KFGOs News & Views on Tuesday. Id give him the whole thing and put strings on it so you make sure he puts the wall where it needs to be. Why are we fighting over this? Were going to build that wall anyway, at some time.
The 15-term congressman said top Democrats look at him cross-eyed when he makes this suggestion.
The funding could come with stipulations requiring some money go toward Border Patrol and improving security measures at ports of entry, Peterson said.
I dont know if I want to give (Trump) a blank check, but I dont want to preclude him from getting the money either, if hes going to use the money correctly, Peterson told the the outlet.
Peterson said Democratic leadership handing over the requested $5.7 billion for the wall would end the unnecessary partial government shutdown which began on Dec. 22.
He is one of Congresss most conservative Democrats and represents Minnesotas 7th Congressional District, an area Trump won by 30 points during the 2016 presidential election.
The chairman of the House Agriculture Committee said he hasnt been in contact with the Trump White House about shutdown negotiations, adding I dont now how we get (to a deal.)
The partial government shutdown, currently in its 32nd day, has forced roughly a quarter of the government to shutter. Approximately 800,000 federal employees have been furloughed or are working without pay.
Trump offered a proposal on Saturday that would fully reopen the government, provide money for the wall and give a three-year extension of legal protections to immigrants who are Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients or Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders.
Top Democrats, however, dismissed his proposal as a non-starter.
Democrats were hopeful that the President was finally willing to re-open government and proceed with a much-need discussion to protect the border. Unfortunately, initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to peoples lives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in statement.
So primary him with AOC’s little sister, and when the dust settles, a Republican will be elected in the general.
“The Demonrats control over their caucus is splintering.”
This conclusion may be a little premature. Even a dying rattlesnake can still be deadly, striking out with even the last tremor.
And the rattlesnake is nowhere near that incapacitated yet.
If I were a furloughed fedgov employee, I’d be lighting up the capitol switchboard urging my liberal rep to play ball with Trump. Give him what he wants.
That's why he's been their congressmen since I lived in his district during my college years and I'm in my 60's now. He is their token guy to poke a stick in Nancy Pelosi's eye. He may also very well be the last Blue Dog.
“After Nancy takes him to the woodshed....”
Woodshed?! He’s going to be sold for body parts or end up in a tuna can like Jimmie Hoffa. Where’s Bill when you need him for a job he is qualified for? His “job needs” are popping up all over and he’s still out to lunch.
rwood
How soon before he turns up dead in some DC park, of an “apparent suicide” - with three bullet holes through the back of his head?
New #1 on AOC’s Most Unwanted List
Our new ‘rat representative from south Jersey, Jeff Van Drew, said about the same thing on TV on Sunday - shouldn’t take too many more before even Nancy starts to understand what’s needed.....
Well, that’s one; only 18 Dems to go to reach 218 and a majority.
One of the dems should just knock her out, and every time she talks pound her again
Still, I think that Trump is winning, and this will soon turn into a wave of weakness on the part of Democrats that Nancy and Chuck will pay for with their careers.
Ask the 4 people murdered in Nevada south of Reno if they would liked to have had a WALL.
Yes, very sad for those murdered and criminal that Dems ignore the fact a criminal illegal alien murdered them.
A Dem and a lucid moment is a rarity.
And Mitch just gave them an out. Stabbed Trump in the back again. Disaster
I think we need $15 billion up front for the wall.
Just because they dragged this out.
lol
Bump!
