Washington Post ^

Posted on 01/22/2019 11:41:50 AM PST by TigerClaws

Correction: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips served in the U.S. Marines from 1972 to 1976 but was never deployed to Vietnam.

So Phillips lied for a couple decades in dozens of interviews saying he was a Vietnam vet.

Oops!

Did WaPo actually see his DD214 or did they just request Phillips ‘clarify.’

There are several demonstrable lies in Chief Cow Chip’s original statements that the MSM has not challenged him on.

I had an instructor at a private trade school I believed was a Vietnam vet. He was stand up enough to admit he wasn’t but when you read his bio he listed himself as Viet Nam Era, veteran.” Slightly misleading.

In his first interview, he said he was a vet from the “Vietnam time”. Later he must have embellished. Still waiting to find out if this scumbag was honorably discharged.

Never been in the military but doesn’t the word veteran indicate you fought overseas?

I graduated from high school in 1976 and nobody I knew ever went near Viet Nam. Also,at that time the military was greatly reducing if I remember right and nobody I knew was going into the military.

No. You just misunderstood. A lot of us served during the “Vietnam Era” but never when near the place. FYI: Vietnam era enlisted vets have the lousiest benefits you could imagine. But, given the times, we were lucky to get any at all ...

I was in the Navy during the period government deems to call the Vietnam War. If I called myself a Vietnam Veteran, that might be misleading. But if I ‘downgrade’ my service to Vietnam ERA Veteran, how is the diminution of my status considered weasling? An ERA vet calling himself a Vietnam Vet would be a weasel, would it not?

“Vietnam ERA Veteran” is not weasel phrase; it is a legal description of the time we served like Gulf War Era, WWII Era etc - none of those descriptions imply combat service, but rather the time frame of the service.

The worst offender is the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA). Membership is open to any active duty veteran (1964-1975) even those who didn't serve in Vietnam.
I quit my local VVA in 1982 because of that crap.

Not misleading, he served during the Vietnam era but was not in Vietnam.

FWIW - if you enlisted prior to Oct 1, 1976, you are considered a Vietnam Era veteran, and qualified for the old GI bill.

Anybody who served in the military is a veteran, combat or not.
