Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(D-N.Y.) and her Republican critics have both called her proposal to dramatically increase America's highest tax rate "radical" but a new poll released Tuesday indicates that a majority of Americans agrees with the idea.
In the latest The Hill-HarrisX survey — conducted Jan. 12 and 13 after the newly elected congresswoman called for the U.S. to raise its highest tax rate to 70 percent — a sizable majority of registered voters, 59 percent, supports the concept.
Ocasio-Cortez has not introduced any legislation to enact the concept but the survey shows a broad cross-section of Americans supports it, at least presently.
Women support the idea by a 62-38 percent margin. A majority of men back it as well, 55 percent to 45 percent. The proposal is popular in all regions of the country with a majority of Southerners backing it by a 57 to 43 percent margin. Rural voters back it as well, 56 percent to 44 percent.
Increasing the highest tax bracket to 70 percent garners a surprising amount of support among Republican voters. In the Hill-HarrisX poll, 45 percent of GOP voters say they favor it while 55 percent are opposed to it.
Independent voters who were contacted backed the tax idea by a 60 to 40 percent margin while Democratic ones favored it, 71 percent to 29 percent.
Ocasio-Cortez is among a group of progressive legislators which includes Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who have called for increasing federal income tax rates on wealthier Americans. The New York Democrat kicked off a debate within her party in a Jan. 6 interview with "60 Minutes" during which she said she would support setting the highest tax, which she said would kick in at individuals 10 millionth dollar of income, at 70 percent.

The best way to get rid of socialism might be to strictly enforce it then. If these people want this sort of thing, then comes the significantly higher unemployment rates, the black markets, corruption, and overall bankruptcy and stagnation that these ideas will ultimately bring. That might likely make enough people learn the hard way.

And yes, our youts were well indictrinated by our lovely K-12 pubic school teachers. I do think, though, that there is a significant percentage that know truth and are questioning things...my one big hope...
They haven’t won yet, but the tipping point will come as more of us pass on. Young people don’t appear to be giving up on socialism as they move into their 30’s. They get their news from social media where Conservatism has mostly been evicted.
Despite all the doom and gloom about this, it wouldn’t be the first time Americans had to deal with this level of exorbitant taxation.
America survived and put out to pasture the politicians who enacted it.

Shouldn’t the question polled at least honestly present the threshold of this 70% tax rate? Once that is presented in writing, an answer might be a valid response to a valid question.

Agreed. That’s why there is constant chatter from the left about being excited for people like me, (old, white, male, not poor, able to think critically), to die off.
I pay attention to many of the people my kid’s age, (26 - 35), they are hard core socialists. The school of hard knocks isn’t educating them. The media, the entertainment world, public schools, universities it’s too much to overcome.
I hope I make my exit before these poor misguided fools get what they want. And they will.

Many Republicans realize that the super rich are now a core Democrat constituency and they contribute massive amounts to Democrats.
It is foolish for Republicans to spend their political capital protecting a group that hates them.
I totally agree. Most Millenials I come into contact with fit that description perfectly.
I am at the young end of the Baby Boom so I might actually have to live through some of this dystopian nightmare.

For all their talk about adopting Scandinavian policies, you never hear them talk about adopting Scandinavian tax rates. That’s because their taxes are much flatter than ours: EVERYONE pays high taxes in Sweden.
The dirty little secret is that the United States has the most “progressive” tax code in the developed world. There is zero evidence that progressive tax rates do anything to further the Left’s professed goal of reducing “income inequality,” in fact, it probably does the opposite.
