The Covington Students Might as Well Have Just Spit on the Cross (TDS Alert)
National Review ^ | January 20, 2019 | Nicholas Frankovich

Posted on 01/21/2019 3:07:52 PM PST by Fiji Hill

It appears that most of the teenagers in this video are from a Catholic high school near Covington, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. They mock a serious, frail-looking older man and gloat in their momentary role as Roman soldiers to his Christ. “Bullying” is a worn-out word and doesn’t convey the full extent of the evil on display here.

For some of us, the gospel stories of Jesus’s passion and death are so familiar we no longer hear them. The evangelists are terse in their descriptions of the humiliations heaped on Jesus in the final hours before his crucifixion, the consummate humiliation. Read the accounts again or, if you’d rather not, watch the video. The human capacity for sadism is too great.

The man the crowd ridiculed is Nathan Phillips, an elder of the Omaha tribe. He was in Washington for the Indigenous Peoples March, on Friday. It coincided with the March for Life, which Covington Catholic High School organized a contingent of students to attend. According to Phillips, their confrontation with him, in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, involved a disagreement about “the wall.” He’s against it. They’re for it. Some of them, including the boy who makes himself the co-star of the video by stepping forward and getting in Phillips’s face, wore “Make America Great Again” hats.

They confused issues. Over the years, I’ve heard (and perpetrated, I confess) some imaginative definitions of the “seamless garment,” or “consistent ethic of life.” It’s a matter of identifying a common principle that can be shown to underlie and unite various causes — the abolition of abortion, of euthanasia, of the death penalty, of you name it — that most people would say are disparate and unrelated. How heightened border security might be of a piece with protecting unborn children is less intuitively obvious than most such hypothetical linkages I’ve encountered.

Among the unfortunate messages that the Covington students are sending through the video, several versions of which have gone viral, is that in its heart the pro-life movement in the United States in 2019 is less concerned to advocate for human rights than to cheer for one of the two major political parties or, more broadly, for one side in the great divide between Right and Left, or red and blue, as if the abortion debate were a Yankees–Red Sox game. Don’t do that if you want to persuade Democrats and independents who are ambivalent about abortion to hear you out on why their lives mattered even when they were gestating, and on why the lives of those who at any given moment are conceived but not yet born matter no less.

In a joint statement, Covington Catholic High School and the Diocese of Covington apologized, condemning the students’ actions and noting that their conduct “is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.” I don’t know how Phillips would describe his religious affiliation. He speaks of indigenous traditions. Some people who observe them integrate them with Christianity, but some don’t. In any case, keeping in mind the parable of the proper priests and the Good Samaritan, whose religious practice Jesus’s listeners thought was wrong, listen to Phillips reflect on his experience on the Mall. Decide for yourself who is more pleasing to Christ, Phillips or his mockers. As for the putatively Catholic students from Covington, they might as well have just spit on the cross and got it over with.

Based on something that was demonically misleading.

I think we shouldn’t beat on each other for this, but rather treat it as a warning of where Satan is trying to go. Try not to get our hair on fire next time around.

Goldberg fired Ann Coulter from NRO after a heated response to 9/11. Frankovich should be toast by now.vtt

That was a different Goldberg. The Jonah Goldberg of today is a Never-Trumper who is going the way of Max Boot, David Frum and Ronald Radosh.

Rush Limbaugh had a spot on take on them and the other “conservative” bootlickers who race to get on the side of the S.J. Warriors without first checking the facts. He was very angry and gave them the full smack this turncoat phony bunch deserves.

I actually don’t wish this. Once the actual explanation gets out, let it embarrass those who went off half cocked, rather than get them dug into a long, drawn out defense. In the long term, a wiser people is the best bulwark in the American model against foolish extremism.

The Jonah Goldberg Review strikes another blow against the non-Left.

Dunno if the kids give politics a thought at all, but it’s enough for the Goldbergers that a Designated Victim Group hates them.

Tariq Nasheed Posts Photo Alleging Covington Catholic Students Wore Blackface, Easily Proven Wrong

Anyone who is familiar with the work of black supremacist Tariq Nasheed knows that he is at the forefront of almost every “racist” event in America, crying foul against evil white people everywhere. Nothing has changed with Nasheed in 2019, as he attacked the boys from Covington Catholic High School on Monday afternoon, well after many normal people came to their senses and realized that the students were unfairly smeared by the media stemming from an incident in Washington, D.C. last Friday.

“Here’s a 2015 photo of #CovingtonCatholic‘s fine, upstanding student body clad in blackface at one of their basketball games harassing an opposing Black player,” he Tweeted.

A few things to note.

First, Covington Catholic’s school colors are blue and white. It is not uncommon for fans of sporting events to do “blackout” games, where the whole stadium dresses in black. If that were the case, and these were Covington Catholic students at a “blackout” game, then the kids were obviously not dressed in blackface as Nasheed claimed.

Most importantly, though, the player whom Nasheed says is being “harassed” (some call this cheering) is wearing a “Clark County” jersey. There is a Clark County, Kentucky, but after looking up the records on MaxPreps, which keeps track of these sorts of things, Covington County did not compete against a team from Clark County, home or away, in either the 2014-2015 season or the 2015-2016 season.

Covington did play Clark County’s High School named George Rogers in their season opener of the 2011-2012 season, but as already explained it was simply a “black out” that had everything to do with school spirit and nothing with race.

The lengths to which the political left will go to smear innocent children is beyond comprehension.

Thanks for posting it! Steyn is a delight.

Covington Catholic High School, which I'd never heard of but is clearly the kind of tony white-privilege joint where they book Brett Kavanaugh to spike the punch at the gang-rape prom. ROFL!

Yep, obviously the whole thing was just an attempt at victim mentality virtue-signaling outrage culture mess we’ve gotten bogged down thanks to this alliance between media and big tech social media that the left uses to their advantage.

The kids were white, had MAGA hats, oh catholic, that’s a good bonus there, and of course that smirk, doesn’t it just scream male privilege, oh and they were marching for the right to live, that means they are anti-woman. We are at the point were free thinking is no longer a thing that is allowed.

This was almost the entire subject of today’s Limbaugh talkie as well as Hannity, and Levin. As well as a slew of postings here in FR. This one is a quick link

What is disturbing is the rapid supporting responses by some so called conservatives that will accept without checking the accusations these pervogressive media sources offer.

Rush was starting to talk about Phillip’s past. Something about Detroit newspaper and a fraternity having an Indian party and Phillips just happened to be walking by....and then I had to go into work.

Did you catch it? Couldn’t find anything tonight on the net.

Nevertrumpianism seems to have become visceral... not just a disagreement about style, which I could easily understand.

Ah! We got Trump supporters in a naughty!

Well, except we really didn’t, unless to make a face at an Indian getting in one’s own face is a naughty.

Yes, Philips raised public hell in Michigan back in 2015 over some perceived slight so he goes back a ways as a leftwing troublemaker. There are also questions as to how he could have been a Vietnam War veteran since he would have been 18 in 1973, when Marine troop levels in VN were minimal. Rush ripped into National Review and other supposed conservative lights who raced after their liberal counterparts to publicly denounce these teenagers without a shred of evidence. We need to do our own boycott - of National Review, Jay Nordlinger, Hugh Hewitt, McCain’s daughter, SE Cupp and the others masquerading as conservatives.

Benjy Shapiro rightly pointed out that people akin to us are going to be killed over the lynch mob generated by this latest example of fake news. However, I call him Benjy because of his stupid remarks about Rep. Steven King.Rep. King's remark were edited to make him appear somewhat racist. I know the technique because something similar happened to my late brother. My brother was in a patriotic group called Jews against Jesse Jackson (Jessie is a big antisemite). The ultra Liberal "Boston Globe" asked my brother if he was hounding Jackson. The "Boston Globe" reported my late brother's question as we are hounding Jackson. There was fake news back in the 80s and even faker news, today. I have never seen it this bad and innocent people on our side will be killed.
