Frederick Douglass ranks among the Founders of this country as the greatest figures in American history. He didn't have the same impact on our nation as men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, but those men were accomplished and wealthy even as British subjects.

Born into slavery and rising from his humble beginnings as he did, Douglass personified what it means to be a "self-made man" -- the core of the American spirit.

Totally agree. A great man and a naturally “stable genius”, who largely taught himself to read and write after given a few lessons in the alphabet.
