President Trump, in a televised White House address Saturday, offered Democrats a compromise package on immigration in an effort to end the nearly monthlong partial government shutdown -- although Democrats dismissed the olive branch as a "non-starter" before Trump even spoke.
Trump announced that he was prepared to back a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as children and were shielded from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, in exchange for the $5.7 billion he has requested for a barrier on the southern border.
"Walls are not immoral," he said, adding that a wall "will save many lives and stop drugs from pouring into our country."
The deal would also extend protections for 300,000 recipients of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program -- which protects immigrants from designated countries with conditions that prevent nationals from returning safely.
"Our immigration system should be a source of pride, not a source of shame," Trump said, urging politicians to "take off their armor" and find solutions.
It would also offer $800 million for drug detection technology to secure ports of entry, 2,750 new border agents and law enforcement professionals, and 75 new immigration judges to reduce the backlog of asylum requests. He said that all his measures have been supported by Democrats before.
He spent much of the address talking about the dangers that an open border presented, describing a "very wide and open gateway for criminals and gang members to enter the United States." However, he also teased the possibility of future, broader immigration reform if his proposals were accepted by Congress.

Wonderful analyses.Dead on. We are winning. This is so important for the future of our children. This is truly an important hour. God bless America. We are seeing a vast shift in public opinions and American Hispanics lead the way. These folks played by the rules— Love their families and their country. It is not fair to them to take their jobs and what they have built will illegal aliens undercutting them. Them sense it.Also Black Americans are hurt . Here we have the highest employment in history for Black Americans and we flood the market with illegals?? We are coming together.
True. Almost surreal.
If you are forced to loan the gummint your money, you should get interest.
Pelvis believes the MSM polls that show she is winning the standoff. She will stand firm, thinking she will win against Trump. It will end up blowing up in her face.
Pelvis. I love it. Autocorrect strikes again.
LOL! Pelvis = Pelosi
I believe you are right.. the democrats would much prefer Trump tho do this on his own. That way they could not say that they agreed. It looks as if Trump must declare a crisis.
Sen McConnell was against Pres Trump for so long and worked against him and as such even if he is trying to work towards the better, it’s going to take quite a while for trust to build back up.
It’s human nature. Right, wrong, or indifferent, it *is* human nature.
Sen McConnell needs to stuff as many judges and other Federal appointments as possible down the path.
He *really* has to work double duty to correct his earlier slowness.
The Dem True Believers promised big things would happen after the midterms but it’s hard to control everything from one house of congress. They are not going to compromise unless the voters demand it.
no it wont
Thinking about it some more...this could be a great move by Trump.
What I mean is this. Now that Trump has offered a compromise, if the Dems turn it down, Trump can build the wall by emergency power and then just not do anything for DACA. Dems chose to pass, so it is what it is.
