CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin fretted Friday that many Americans would dismiss the news media as a "bunch of leftist liars" in the wake of the BuzzFeed News story called "not accurate" by special counsel Robert Mueller's office.
BuzzFeed set off a Washington firestorm on Thursday with its report that President Donald Trump had directed longtime lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. However, on Friday night, a spokesman for Mueller's office said the report was "not accurate."
"BuzzFeed's description of specific statements to the Special Counsel's Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen's Congressional testimony are not accurate," the spokesman said in a statement.
The story had dominated political discussions throughout the day on Friday, with multiple Democrats saying the report, if true, could merit impeachment proceedings against Trump. The rare comment by Mueller's office calling the report inaccurate caused the left-leaning Toobin to worry it would further diminish the media's reputation with the public.
"The larger message that a lot of people are going to take from this story is that the news media are a bunch of leftist liars who are dying to get the president, and they're willing to lie to do it," Toobin said. "And I don't think that's true."
"I just think this is a bad day for us … It reinforces every bad stereotype about the news media," he added.
"Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter agreed with his latter statement but said as a media reporter, he was "desperate" for his audience to judge individuals and brands on a case-by-case basis.

I can’t stop wondering if they’re serious in not knowing how they’re perceived....or if it’s just one of those things they just don’t acknowledge because there’s nothing to gain from it.
If they seriously believe they still have credibility left to lose then they’re living inside an enormous bubble, the equivalent of being in The Matrix.
...but they can’t seriously think we believe anything they say - right? I defies belief....but they still seem to believe they can “report the news” as though its 2014. This last Presidential election cycle exposed them all, along with the Wikileaks showing their collusion with Democrats. Now they act like it all never happened and we still view them as respectable journalists.

I don’t care that they are communists. I hate them (lame stream media outlets) because they are pathological liars. The fact that they are also communist makes it that much easier.
Nah - this was just another nail in their coffin...I hear there are so,many nails in it this one had to be glued onto the existing nails.
This shows that if someone has anything anti-Trump, the commie media can be punked. This makes them very vulnerable which is indeed very good news. Who knows, this could have been a canary trap by Trump team. But we know that outsiders like O’keefe can punk the left all the time.
One would also think that an organization that does not carefully source and verify their info would also be susceptible to infiltration by moles. The media has been complicit in the “leak strategy” so many of them legitimately be under investigation (ie people like Issakof).
I hope Trump has a mole somewhere in the Mueller team. They also should be investigating Weismann for knowingly using the fake dossier for a FISA warrant. Even though Weismann is evil squared, he could be flipped if he’s under heat.

Nothing really. That’s why it reinforces the theory that the Buzzfeed was punked either by the Trump team or an outsider like O’keefe. A successful plunking has to be based on a credible premise without creating too much risk. A more serious accusation might not be believed and could create problems for the source.

I'm wondering this too and further I thought I recalled the president saying something to this effect - they were trying to do a deal but it didn't work out; however, it wouldn't have been a problem had it worked out

Then I don’t understand why the story on buzzfeed got any more than an Ho Hum from any news outlet. Where on earth did they see anything that pointed to “collusion” or “impeachment?” They go overboard a lot but the reaction to this was just plain off the wall nuts! I have yet to hear anyone explain just what set them off but that could be because I can’t stand more than 5 minutes at a time of any news program.
