Waiting for a Shutdown to End in Disaster
The Atlantic ^ | 1/18/2019 | MCKAY COPPINS

Posted on 01/18/2019 9:45:44 AM PST by PreciousLiberty

As the longest government shutdown in American history lurches toward its fifth week, a grim but growing consensus has begun to emerge on Capitol Hill: There may be no way out of this mess until something disastrous happens.

This is, of course, not a sentiment lawmakers are eager to share on the record. But in interviews this week with congressional staffers on both sides of the aisle (whom I granted anonymity in exchange for candor), I heard the same morbid idea expressed again and again.

The basic theory—explained to me between weary sighs and defeated shrugs—goes like this: Washington is at an impasse that looks increasingly unbreakable. President Donald Trump is dug in; so is Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Democrats have public opinion on their side, but the president is focused on his conservative base. For a deal to shake loose in this environment, it may require a failure of government so dramatic, so shocking, as to galvanize public outrage and force the two parties back to the negotiating table.

In most of the murders, suspects have been arrested quickly. I thought, after the light sentence on Steinlie and if some suspects get away and not arrested, there might some vigilante action.

“Democrats have public opinion on their side, but the president is focused on his conservative base.

Proof?? The Atlantic is a sad reflection of the media’s desire to push an agenda that is contrary to fact and willfully ignores its critics.”

Exactly. The Atlantic and its readers will be sad to hear that Trump is now at 50%(!) approval with hispanics. That’s awesome, even if it’s sad to see so many other groups with no clue...

I’m pretty sure the Dem’s heads are exploding about now... LOL

Trump is merely being sensible and allowing the opposition to go further off its nut than ever before.

Will Mexico pay for a Wall? I don’t know, but it really doesn’t matter, in the gain that both we and Mexico get from having orderly Doors between us. This isn’t about who’s right; it’s about what’s right.

“She has no idea how to deal with Trump. He just runs rings around her.”

It’s like that scene in “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull” where the Russian driver is trying to play chicken with Indy. The Russian is saying “He’ll turn, he’ll turn”, and Marian says “YOU DON’T KNOW HIM!”

How did the spike in Hispanic support happen — maybe Trump wasn’t such a humongous racist as was projected on him after all? That this isn’t about race at all but about international relations?

Even the relative economic load wouldn’t be such a big deal — the US-Mexico border wasn’t always as well policed even as today — if it weren’t for the other crime that goes with it. Gun runners, drug lords, gangs who perpetually play king of the hill and don’t care whom else they kill. It is a scourge to the USA. It is a scourge to Mexico.

The DemonicRats have been intransigent for 40 yrs now. NOW a Republican is refusing to budge. Doesn’t matter if it is the budget or applying justice to Comey et al THERE IS GOING TO BE AN EXPLOSION. Anyone who is just coming to this realization now is an idiot.

she said. “I’ve been in D.C. nine years, and I’ve never seen people this miserable.”

If she would have spent some of the last nine years somewhere other than DC, socializing primarily with other DC people, she would have.

Trump has out foxed the Dems again. If the shutdown goes more than 30 days he can fire non-essential employees. I guess the non-essential’s have been deemed as obstructionists and slowing down getting things done and the problems are now being delegated to the supervisors which in turn are proving that the “ non-essentials” are not needed for government to function. Remember project veritas?

If we can get enough people to understand this document it will end in ways nobody is predicting:
http://www.ushistory.org/declaration/document/

The conversation is at the wrong level - and the "leaders" love that. We ("the people") need to get back to basics and principles.

A lot (way too many) have been brainwashed into a different set of unrealistic principles (i.e. communism). But a lot of people are being distracted from principles based on anecdotal situations that are hyped 24/7 by Pelosi, Democrats, google, Gillette, etc. A majority of "We The People" still agree on the principles set forth over 200 years ago. And once you can get someone to agree on common principles, the "solutions" to problems are much easier to discuss. If someone won't agree on principles, there's no reason to talk further (the situation in DC). But when we agree on common principles we can move forward even on issues where we disagree.

I guess funding the wall like the Dems have supported in the past would be a "disaster"?
