I think he actually said “ F U” !
He said ‘Nuts!’ which, according to legend, actually caused confusion amongst the Germans and bought the Americans more time to plan their next action.

I read that when he was handed the note demanding the American surrender he asked his staff how he should respond.
One officer told him “just tell them what you tell us when you don’t like something”.
So “Nuts” it was.
