Nice graphic. Bonus question: how many people know the origination of 'short bus'? That is, most people know the term pertains to transporting "special" students, but what is the source of said special students and why is the bus short?

Here's one explanation: when courts began to rule in favor of mandated busing across district lines - in order to achieve their idea of racial integration - many districts retaliated by creating special adjacent "magnet" schools (1-2 miles away). In this manner, they were able to re-route out-of-district students away from their natural geographic student body, and also utilize a nice Orwellian twist by labeling them as magnets. That is, the bused in students were not only getting equal treatment, they were getting special treatment.

In Long Island, this program was called Boces, and the short buses were called "Boces buses". The buses were short, of course, because the number of students to be routed away from the main student body was relatively small compared to the majority group. To this day, Boces still attempts to frame its existence as some kind of positive program, when in reality, it's always been a subtle means of preserving the demographic status quo of effected school districts.

As a Calif native, how do I know all this? Because my wife is an Ivy league New Yorker from Nassau county. And between her and her friends from home, the epithet "Boces Bus" still remains in effect.

Please, someone archive that picture. I have a feeling it’s going to be needed again and again.
