Based on the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI), about 1 in 5 (21%) of all state and federal prisoners reported that they had possessed or carried a frearm when they committed the ofense for which they were serving time in prison (fgure 1) . More than 1 in 8 (13%) of all prisoners had used a frearm by showing, pointing, or discharging it during the ofense for which they were imprisoned. Fewer than 1 in 50 (less than 2%) of all prisoners had obtained a frearm from a retail source and possessed, carried, or used it during the ofense for which they were imprisoned. An estimated 287,400 prisoners had possessed a frearm during their ofense. Among these, more than half (56%) had either stolen it (6%), found it at the scene of the crime (7%), or obtained it of the street or from the underground market (43%). Most of the remainder (25%) had obtained it from a family member or friend, or as a gif.

Seven percent had purchased it under their own name from a licensed frearm dealer

If you give a gun to a known felon you should go to prison. However when the ATF does it and has their store broken into and keeps no records it is okay.

I think the amazing part of the story is that you still had 7-percent who bought their weapon legally.

The important point here is that no amount of laws are going to stop gun violence. Criminals will get them and use them to commit crime. Criminals break laws. Who knew?

Regular Citizens don’t have a gun because they follow the laws. And thus they will be sitting ducks.

Yes, I know many folks will still keep their guns. Much of the populace wouldn’t. Those folks would be subject to at will killing, rapes, robberies, kidnapping...

You name it, crime related, gun control would usher it in.

Bingo.

93%+ of guns used in crime are not going through any regulation.

It’s almost as if bad guys are willing to break the law!

This survey samples only current inmates. In L.A. County, 90% of murders go unsolved. Even worse stats with robberies and other gun-related crimes. Some criminals (violent ones) wind up dead and also don't appear in this survey sample.

So, it's an interesting data point... but way too small to draw any real conclusions from.

***7-percent who bought their weapon legally.***

Of those seven, how many were not felons when they bought their firearm from a private individual? That would be classed as “legal” private sale.
