Theresa May survives no-confidence vote
Axios ^ | 1/16/19 | Dave Lawler

A day after her Brexit plan suffered the worst parliamentary defeat in modern British political history, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May has survived a motion of no-confidence brought by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn by a vote of 325-306.

Why it matters: May's job has been under threat for months, and yet she keeps on surviving. Having already seen off one challenge from rebels in her own party, she's now defeated a motion from the opposition. Still, May is no closer to delivering on Brexit with 10 weeks left until the U.K. is scheduled to leave the European Union.

Me, too. Now the question is what substantive proposal for implementing Brexit can she produce? I hope there’s something to hope for.

It can mean several things: They want to do Brexit, just find her plan for it deficient and want something better. They don’t want Jeremy Corbin as PM, so they’ll settle on May, despite her shortcomings. They don’t want Brexit, and don’t care if they’re voted out of office, so badly do they hate Brexit. Unlikely.

Seriously, in 1940, Neville Chamberlain foolishly said that Hitler had missed the bus, since England has had sufficient time to rearm and catch up. Two days later Hitler invaded Norway, using the armaments his industry had manufactured while England was rearming. Chamberlain narrowly survived a no confidence vote, and resigned. The King asked Churchill to put together a coalition government, and he did. May ought to resign with such a disgraceful showing, and yield to a more credible candidate for PM, then call for elections.

Was the 325 pure Coservatives and DU? Two abstentions from the group? Deliberate or permitted?

Maybe it will mean a ‘hard Brexit’ instead of a ‘soft’ one......................

So long as there’s a Brexit, it’s good.

It’s a kabuki theatre. The Globals have no intention of losing. That’s why they labeled May’s crap sandwich “Brexit”, so all the choices would be a win for them.

Don’t want to sound like an optimist but ... if Farage is cool with these latest outcomes, there may be hope for the UK yet.

” ...the UK will leave without a deal or decide that its too risky and remain in the EU after all.”

The latter is not an option. March 29th is the “drop-dead” date for the EU. This may give May some additional leverage with Brussels to obtain more concessions.

Methinks at this point the "common man" is so fed up with the l33ts, he will welcome a no-deal since it's a hard brexit.

The definition of insanity is to do the same thing repeatedly, and expect a different result.

So, by my reckoning, these people are either insane or else dumber than a box of rocks.

Either way, they deserve what they get.

“The parliament wants to stay in the EU, they don’t care about what the people want and voted for twice.................”

No they don’t care about a popular vote and they are not supposed to.

The UK is neither a democracy nor a republic, the referendum was a foolish idea since, at the end of the day, the role of people voting in their system is quite limited.

Getting out of the EU is not foolish. What a < deleted > thing to say.

No getting out is not foolish.

Having a referendum in a state in which popular voting is not very important is foolish.

Permanent political class just like in Germany. Everyone in her party hates her but they don’t want to lose their expense accounts and offices, which will happen when Labour takes over. Just like under King George III. The Parliament just sat there and twiddled their thumbs while he reasserted his authority and persecuted the colonies. Now its Queen May, who has no moral support just a bunch of other losers pissing their pants.

Well arguably the UK is a system of responsible government. We vote and then trust the leaders to be leaders and make the hard decisions. Of course if that was the case Brexit would never have happened. But they made the choice to enact a referendum and should stick by it.

Sometimes I hold parliamentary systems in a lower regard since they have less checks and balances, but, in the USA we seem to have a FBI that does whatever the hell it wants with no accountability, so is the USA really any better?

No rebels, no abstentions among the Tories.

At any given moment, a seat or two is usually unoccupied due to death or resignation. Or maybe somebody is sick and unable to make it to Parliament. Or a seat has changed hands from one party to another in a by-election.

Some Labourites at odds with Corbyn or the party establishment or in serious legal trouble also abstained.
