King rips GOP leadership after criticism over 'white supremacist' remarks

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) panned House Republican leaders on Tuesday for their criticism over remarks he made in an interview with The New York Times last week regarding white supremacy.

“[House Minority Leader Kevin] McCarthy [R-Calif.] decided he’s going to believe The New York Times over Steve King, and that’s a fact,” King told conservative radio host Ed Martin on his show Tuesday.

King also went after House GOP Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), saying she was wrong to call for his resignation in the wake of his comments.

“And I will tell you, if there’s support out there for Liz Cheney after this, you can’t ever put her in the category of being a conservative again. She called for my resignation. She’s been here two years. What would give her the moral authority or the intellectual judgement to do something like that?” he said.

King ignited a bipartisan firestorm after he asked The Times last week, “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?”

The Iowa Republican, a staunch opponent of illegal immigration, has a history of making controversial comments. He has argued that his comments last week were taken out of context, though he has not accused The Times of misquoting him, he noted Tuesday.

House Republicans have removed King from his positions on the House Judiciary, Agriculture and Small Business committees. The House also overwhelmingly passed a resolution Tuesday condemning white nationalism and white supremacy by a 424-1 vote, with the lone dissenter saying it was not specific enough in its condemnation of King.

McCarthy, who oversaw the removal of King from his committee posts, said, “There is no room for white supremacy,” while Cheney said King should “find another line of work.”

Reps. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) and Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) have both introduced resolutions to censure King for his remarks.

The Iowa Republican told Martin on Tuesday that he’s “at peace” with the comments.

“I am at peace with my soul with this and I am confident that what I have done has been true and right and just and honest,” he said. “I’m very comfortable standing before God and answering for all of this.”

Though leaders in both parties and chambers of Congress have called on King to resign, the nine-term congressman suggested this week he has no intention of doing so.

“I will continue to point out the truth and work with all the vigor that I have to represent 4th District Iowans for at least the next two years,” King said Monday.

No, I can’t.

No conservative has EVER been given a fair shake by the NY Slimes.

Gut that does not make him an idiot - I know Rep. King, and yes, he goofed, but he is not an idiot.

“Reps. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) and Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) have both introduced resolutions to censure King for his remarks.”

From Wiki:

Bobby Rush-
“Rush’s own apartment was raided in December 1969, where police discovered an unregistered pistol, rifle, shotgun, pistol ammunition, training manuals on explosives, booby traps, an assortment of communist literature, and a small amount of marijuana.[6] Rush was imprisoned for six months in 1972 on a weapons charge, after carrying a pistol into a police station. In 1974, he left the Panthers, who were already in decline.”

The Black Panthers are a black nationalist, communist organization.

Tim Ryan-
“Born in Niles, Ohio, Ryan worked as an aide to Congressman Jim Traficant after graduating from Bowling Green State University.”

For you younger Freepers, Traficant was famous for being booted from Congress and going to prison for 7 years for bribery, racketeering and tax evasion. I wonder what kind of “errands” Traficant had Ryan do.

OK

He goofed up. That does not make him an idiot!

In my experience, just about everyone does something goofy during their lifetime; one goof does not make a person an idiot!

Steve King is not “a foolish or stupid person” just because he talked to the NY Slimes.

On the other hand, he had outstanding hair.

They are not idiots, they are trying to get rid of the few that represent the citizens and stand for the rule of law.

Most of the elected are Bush League Republicans hell bent on completing the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA)

King rips GOP leadership

"GOP leadership" is an oxymoron if I've ever heard one since the Congressional contingent is largely composed of cowards. Trump must feel like a championship coach saddled with a bumbling, second-rate squad.

#17. King should also drop out of the GOP and go “Independent”. With the loss of the House due to GOP incompetence and arrogance, they can hardly afford to lose another person.

In fact, I would like to see an Independent Caucus be created, if only with enough ex-GOPers to hold the balance of power for any close vote now, or if the GOP retakes the House in 2020.

The Demos got 60 seats. The GOP lost over 30. Ever member counts now!!

He should be more thoughtful and also stop giving NYT interviews. They are NOT your friends. Regardless of his outcome this hasn’t helped us at all.

Yeah - and a "She shouldn't wear dresses that show her knees w/o expecting to be assaulted..." meme works just as well....

The problem isn't what he said, it's that so many that should know better have jumped on the NYSlimes bandwagon and shown their true colors.

The average American gets soundbites at best for their news. When you go do an interview with NYT, WAPO, CNN or NBC etc, which sound bites are they going to reply and how will they portray them? With Republicans, not favorably, so why bother?

McCarthy must suffer great pain over this decision. Hopefully, King knows secrets that can be used to destroy him.

If nothing else, it keeps showcasing their malfeasance...the really distressing crap is how the House repubs reacted.

You are idealizing what should be, but the reality is its very bad for not well informed swing voters.
